Can a Chow Chow be trained for protection, obedience, and dog socialization?

There is no guarantee with any breed, but being raised together can help. Just make sure you are always there when they play that way you can intervene and correct whoever is being too rough. generally the smaller dogs are usually in charge anyway

Every pet has their own personality, but certain breeds do have certain tendencies that are more common to them. You won't be able to know if Liberty is a loud barker, until you actually hear him bark. Also "loud barking" is a very subjective thing. What is loud to one person may not be loud to another. Give her time to grown and develop into her own personality, which typically occur around 6-8 months of age. I would encourage you to contact a dog trainer that can work with you and Micah in person to really take care of this behavior. The sooner these behaviors are dealt with, the more likely it is that you can improve and resolve them. I love Chows, I have one myself and think they are the best dogs! You won't necessarily get a better quality puppy if you pay more for it. Some breeders will charge more depending on their expenses and what procedures are done on the puppies as well as the dam and sire. What's most important is to find out what tests have been done on the dam and sire. That will determine if your puppy will be better quality or not. The tests I'm referring to are for potential hereditary problems. In the Chow, this would be for the eyes, hips, and joints. I will include a link below about Chows and tests they should have done before breeding to make sure that their puppies are as healthy as possible. Ask the breeder if they've done any of these tests, and ask to see the paperwork. If they haven't done the tests, do not get a puppy from them. I can tell you from experience that a Chow Chow would not be a good idea! I have a Chow, and they are terribly difficult to train because they are so stubborn. When she gets the chance to be off leash, she will take off and not come back. I can't tell you how many times I've had to chase her down. Sharpeis are also very stubborn dogs and hard to train, so I would not recommend that breed either. Your friend needs a dog that is easy to train so he can take them off leash. I'd recommend a Golden Retriever or a Lab. I hope this helps!

I love Chow Chows! I have a red female Chow Chow who is almost 10 years old, and she is just the best dog. No, it's not true that Chow Chow's diets should be cut down on meat. I personally feed my Chow Iams dog food, and she does great on it. There could be a couple of reasons why Heisenberg is reluctant to eat. He could have a dental problem that is making it painful for him to eat, or it could be he is suffering from a medical illness causing a decrease in appetite. Due to this, I would have him checked out by a vet in the next couple of days. just to make sure everything is ok health wise with him. If he is healthy, then it may simply be that he doesn't like the flavor of food you are feeding. Royal Canin is an excellent brand of food, and he is close to needing to be fed an adult food. You could try switching his food to Royal Canin medium breed adult food, or using another brand such as Hill's Science Diet, Purina ProPlan, or Iams. If you do switch his food brand, do it slowly to avoid any GI upset. I hope this helps!

Yes, he can still be trained. I recommend finding a good trainer and getting a few private sessions first, then joining a group obedience class. Learning with other dogs and people around is very helpful when it's in a controlled situation. Dogs gain confidence and respect when they learn obedience and can behave with distractions. They want to please but need guidance and praise to learn. Dogs respond well to a routine, praise, and treats for good behavior. In addition giving plenty of exercise so Hootch is tired every day is important since a tired dog is less reactive.
