Why is my chihuahua suddenly stuck on her bed and crying a lot?

Poor girl. I am not sure if this strictly behavioral due to old age and a bit of senility or if she has an underlying issue. It would be worth while getting her examined by your vet to have a health profile done via bloodwork to ensure everything is normal, especially since this behavior is happening in consecutive days. If she is having senility issues, then that can be addressed with medication (i.e. Reconcile) or with a prescription diet (ie Hill’s B/D). Another possible cause for sudden whimpering in older pets is arthritis. This can be helped with joint supplements (ie Dasuquin, Cosequin, Rejuvenate) in mild cases or prescription pain control medication (ie Rimadyl, Galliprant) through your vet in more moderate to severe cases. Small breed dogs are prone to neck and/or back pain which can be quite excruciating for them. Based your description of her sleeping more than normal, not wanting to do stairs and not running as much, this is a possibility. The veterinarian will examine her and determine if she is in fact painful. If so, x-rays may be taken. Based on these results, treatment can be started to help her feel better. In the meantime, keep her quiet and carry her as much as possible. Do not give any over-the-counter pain medications as these can be toxic to dogs. First of all, Luna is adorable! I'm sorry to hear that she seems a bit uncomfortable today. Since the focus of her crying and whining seems to center around jumping on or off of the bed, my main concern would be that she developed a back or neck injury. In some cases, dogs can be quite stoic with these injuries until they move or are handled in certain manners. Back injuries can also cause referred pain in the abdomen, which could explain why she pants (this can be a sign of pain) when you pick her up. It can be difficult to precisely determine if back or neck pain are present without a lot of training, and it is often overlooked at home. Since she is intermittently crying and panting, it sounds as though Luna may be relatively painful. I recommend taking her to the vet for an exam to try to determine the source of this pain so that treatment can be started. Until you can get to the vet, keep her restricted to a crate or small room and avoid allowing her to jump on or off of furniture or use the stairs, as this could exacerbate any underlying injury. Poor Jersey. There are so many things that could be going on. If she is eating and drinking and playing then she is likely healthy but she could be painful somewhere or having had separation anxiety. If she is crying mostly when you are away but does okay when you are holding her or near by, this is likely anxiety. You can try playing some music or the tv while you are gone to give her comfort. If she is crying all the time, refusing to eat/drink then I would be concerned something more serious is going on. Unfortunately there isn't a good over the counter pain medicine. That you can give her as most human pain meds are toxic to dogs. You can try to entice her to eat using plain chicken and rice or canned food. If she is still refusing to eat, put some honey or Karl syrup on her gums to prevent low blood sugar then take her to your vet for an exam. With her being so small I worry she may get dehydrated and malnourished. I hope this helps and she starts to feel better.

The constant crying indicates discomfort somewhere or fear/anxiety. It can be many, many things so with out examining her I can not tell you for sure. Possibilities are: anal glands, back pain, stomach pains from gas, fleas, nausea, she could be in heat, etc. Look her all over, especially her skin. Try to take her for a walk and see how she does. Hello, Maggie looks like she is a real cutie. Not wanting to jump is a very clear indication of either back or abdominal pain. Since her BMs are normal, I would guess her back is bothering her a bit. Rest & antiinflammatories are the best cure for this type of thing. You can apply a little warmth to her back for about 10 minutes 2-3 times a day but speak with your veterinarian about some pain medication. She is, after all, getting to be a senior citizen.
