My Chihuahuas aren't eating much. Why have they lost their appetite?

Loss of appetite can be observed with many conditions such as gastroenteritis, dietary indiscretion, kidney disease, pancreatitis, among many other possibilities. I recommend that you have Mocha evaluated by your veterinarian for further assessment and treatment. They would be able to check for these possibilities and others depending on the findings on exam. I am sorry to hear about Marley! I would recommend an examination by a vet to see if his weight is healthy. While "chubby" chihuahuas may be cute, it is not healthy for a dog to be overweight. Often we are so used to seeing overweight pets a pet of a healthy weight looks too thin to us. You can use these images to try to evaluate your pet's body condition: https://www.purina.co.uk/dogs/health-and-nutrition/exercise-and-weight-management/dog-body-condition-tool If your dog is truly underweight, then the vet can discuss tests to check for medical causes for his low appetite or weight issue.

Eating less than before and losing weight is concerning. This may be caused by a tooth problem, pain in the mouth or jaws, gastrointestinal disease, general pain and many other conditions. Unfortunately it is a very unspecific sign so I suggest you take your dog to your vet for an exam and some blood work to get to the bottom of this.

Poor Tiny. Without seeing him, I cannot say for sure why his fur is changing colors or why he has a poor appetite. His fur could be changing due to age or chronic chewing/licking. If he has a skin infection or thyroid problems, this could also cause his fur to change. There are a number of reason than can cause them to have a decreased appetite. I would have your vet take a look to ensure there isn't something that needs treatment for both the skin and appetite. If he has always been a picky eater then I would be less concerned. Some of these guys prefer to have homecooked meals which is fine as long as you feed them a proper and balanced diet. I would look into recipes off balanceit.com. I hope this helps!

Have you tried to mix it with canned dog food? Also you could give her boiled or canned chicken (no bones) over her food to help her gain weight. Both of these are ok and safe. Finally, if you want to make her on food I would check out some of the recipes on www.balanceit.com to ensure she is getting all the nutrients she needs. Unfortunately chihuahuas are known for not wanting to eat regular dog food often!

If Chuchi is acting normally and isn't vomiting for having diarrhea I would try to add warm water to her food or 1 tablespoon of canned food mixed with water on her food. Sometimes dogs hold out for something better or tastier to come along, but most healthy dogs won't choose starvation. Try a few things then set a schedule for eating. Feed her in a quiet room, give her an hour of quiet time to eat then remove the food until the next meal. You didn't indicate how long she hasn't been eating. If it has been more than 2 days I would have her seen by a Vet to be sure nothing medical is going on. I hope this helps and I wish you and Chuchi the best!

There are many things that could make Lucy skinny all of a sudden. Intestinal worms, kidney disease, neoplasia or inadequate calories are all potential causes. I would recommend to take Lucy into the vet for a fecal exam and some bloodwork. The fact that she doesn't want to eat could be an indicator that she does not feel good. Best to get her in quickly as diseases are easier to treat early. I hope this helps!
