My old Chihuahua has a loose tooth & skin scabs. What should I do?

Pet's info: Dog | Chihuahua | Male | neutered | 13 years and 3 months old | 3 lbs

13 year old Chihuahua 2-4 pounds loose tooth and dry skin scabs. Vets won't help because he's allergic to shots so he's only had one his whole life. how to help him and is aquaphor safe? what can I do about his tooth? and how to get him to stop chewing scabs?

The tooth is likely loose due to severe dental disease. Old chihuahuas commonly have badly diseased teeth and lose many, if not all, of their teeth.

Unfortunately, you are not able to do much about this at home. He needs the loose tooth removed by a veterinarian and probably needs some other teeth removed. They can also clean the remaining teeth and help protect them from getting diseased.

It also sounds like there is a skin disease. This could be due to an allergy, fleas, mites or infection. It would also be good to have the vet diagnose the skin problem, so he can get the best treatment and finally not have those scabs anymore.

Aquaphor is safe for the skin and good for wounds, but could be toxic if ingested, so be careful to not put it on areas of the body that he can lick.

I understand that Charlee is allergic to shots (I assume you mean vaccines), but this would not preclude him from getting treatment for his teeth and skin. Any veterinarian should be able to help you with these problems and it's going to be the best thing you can do for him. Dental disease is a painful condition, so I'm sure he'd be much happier with those diseased teeth out and healthy skin.

    Charlee is quite the old dog! He is very cute but it sounds like he is dealing with some pretty bad dental disease. There are many combinations of shots to administer to cats and dogs for anesthetic procedures. He may be more sensitive to the shots used before surgery but the doses can be adjusted so that they are safer. If he is allergic to the vaccinations, then you and your vet must come to a decision on never vaccinating or administering the vaccines every few years rather than every year. For the tooth that is loose, the best way to address this is to schedule a dental cleaning. During the cleaning, there may be multiple teeth that need to be removed. This is not uncommon in smaller dogs. Charlee may need to go on a course of antibiotics prior to the dental cleaning. I would also get the scabs examined by a vet to determine what these could be. The scabs may be secondary to allergies, skin infection or skin mites. I hope this helps! Please let me know if you have any questions / concerns. As for the aquaphor, use at your own risk. This is a human product and not labeled for use in animals. I would use a product called BioBalm over Aquaphor. This is a veterinary specific lotion and it works great!

Poor Cheepie does sound very uncomfortable! This scratching can be caused by fleas, mites, ringworm, or allergies. If he isn't up to date on his flea treatment, he will need a spot on treatment such as Advantage or Revolution. You will need to disinfect the environment as well. Even if he is up to date on his flea treatment, I recommend taking him into the vet for an exam tomorrow. He may have a skin infection from all the scratching, and he will need medications to treat that. If he is up to date on his flea treatments, the vet can do blood tests, skin scrapings, and use a Wood's lamp to diagnose allergies, mites, and ringworm. Once the cause of the itching is found, the vet can prescribe the appropriate treatment.

This is not uncommon in the breed. If Scott is an adult Chihuahua, he may have periodontal disease which could be affecting his teeth. If he is a puppy between 4 and 6 months of age, he may be losing puppy teeth which is normal. Without a physical exam, it is difficult to determine what may be causing the loose teeth. Since he is new to you, consider having him examined by your veterinarian. If necessary, a complete oral exam and dental cleaning may resolve the problem. If his teeth are "bad", he may need to have the loose ones extracted to prevent pain and infection.

My Chihuahua has loose, rotting teeth. Can I pull them myself?
Hello. I would not pull them. Even though the teeth appear loose,, they will still have fairly good attachments to their dental ligaments. If you pull, this will be quite painful & the resulting tear will cause quite a bit of bleeding. The bleeding will stop, but it can be quite a bit of blood that may need compression or cautery to stop. If Marley swallows a tooth, it will pass with no problems, so no need to worry about this. Hi. Just as in humans, yes dental problems can be very painful. There aren't any ways with that much damage you can help at home, other then softening the food to help her eat. There are no safe human or over the counter pain medications unless directed by your veterinarian. A veterinarian would perform a full exam, recommend a dental under anesthesia and clean the teeth. While cleaning, they also check for loose teeth, bone loss, pockets, abscesses, x-rays, etc. to determine which teeth should be extracted for the patients health and comfort. Warning signs of dental disease are redness of gums, loose teeth, bad breath, pain, decreased appetite, chewing differently, and guarded of mouth. You'll need to watch his appetite, pain level, and quality of life.

Why do my 6-year-old chihuahua's teeth look like they're decaying?
What I see in your pictures looks like tartar buildup. It happens more frequently in smaller breeds and is sometimes associated with feeding wet food. Getting her teeth cleaned by your vet will remove the tartar (you can't clean it off by yourself, it's adhered firmly to the teeth) and ensure she remains healthy for longer. Tartar buildup will trap more material, irritate the gums, breed bacteria, leading to foul breath, gum and even heart disease, as the irritated gum allow the bacteria to get into the bloodstream more easily. I recommend getting her in to see your vet for an exam and bloodwork to see how well she'll tolerate anesthesia. She will have to be anesthetized for the procedure. Trust me, this is in everyone's best interests. It greatly reduces the stress for your dog and keeps the veterinary staff from getting bitten by a frightened dog. They will remove the tartar with a scaler, polish the teeth to make it more difficult for new tartar to adhere and most likely recommend some treatments you can do at home to help slow the rate at which tartar collects on her teeth in the future.

Akilla appears to have severe dental disease from these photos. She needs to see a veterinarian for assessment and probable dental cleaning and and extractions under anesthesia.
