My dog eats Kibbles 'n Bits and is healthy. Should I change her food?

I am happy Luna is feeling better but a picky eater can be very frustrating. In my experience most dogs will not starve themselves. Changing foods often or back and forth Luna is learning if she does not eat she will get a better or different food. If the vet told you she is healthy I would start some touch love on her. I would get a food you want to feed and put it out for her. If she does not eat for 1-2 days than I would not be concerned. Typically once Luna realizes she is not getting anything else she will eat. Also if LUna is holding her body weight I do not get overly concerned. My own dogs will eat fast one day and slow or not at all the next. I think dogs will sometimes change there eating habits and this is okay as long as they are maintain weight and are still happy and healthy. I hope that helps

Kibbles and Bits is considered a "grocery" brand food, and while nutritionally balanced, may not be the highest quality compared to some other brands. However, most all commercial dog foods need to meet a set of AAFCO standards to be on the market, and checking for an AAFCO statement on the bag can help you determine if it meets these standards. People food should be limited as dogs cannot digest or handle all of the items we eat. Some foods may cause digestive upset if they are too high in fat or contain toxic ingredients. Bananas and small pieces of sausage/hotdog, however, should be OK in moderation (small amounts!). Dog kibble can also be used hidden inside chew toys or other objects as a treat incentive without causing issues.

You need to keep in mind that every pet is different and what works for your dog may not work for someone else's. I recommend a food that is certified by AAFCO to start as this means that is meets minimum standards. Next, the puppy need to like it and eat it willingly. There needs to be no vomiting and diarrhea on the diet nor an excessive amount of bowel movements. A dog should defecate 2-3 times per day. More than this is abnormal. Finally, her haircut should be glossy and healthy. If she is meeting all of these requirements on her diet, then there is no reason to change. My only warning is to avoid grain free diets as there is recent research linking them to heart disease. I hope this information helps!

Thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! Sure, you can use baby food mixed into kibbles if you like. But the real question is why won’t Luna eat the dry food? Possibilities include: 1) A bad tooth or other mouth problem 2) An organ dysfunction, disease, or infection that affects appetite 3) She has you well trained. I recommend seeing your vet to help rule out medical causes. If nothing is found, it could simply be that she has you well trained and knows that if she waits long enough, you’ll put something good in her bowl. My advice for that is to wait her out. Don’t give in and within 3 days, every healthy dog I know has eaten plain kibbles. Of course if Luna is a healthy weight and you don’t mind pampering her, that’s fine too, so long as she does get some dog food (it has all the minerals and vitamins we need her to get). This is a great question about Chloe. I do not believe it is necessary for her to be on a "small bites" food. As long as she is on a good, well balance food then a little large kibble is perfectly okay. Natural Balance LID is a great diet and as long as she is willing to eat the regular sized kibbles, then go for it! (p.s. I love cavaliers!)
