How to change microchip ownership if I can't reach previous owner?

If you have the chip number and the company, you can call the chip company and update the information. If not, your vet can scan the pet for the chip number. You can use aaha website to put the chip number in which will give you the company name to call and update

Unfortunately, it's nearly impossible to remove a microchip, so that cannot be done. As for deactivating it, it's not an active item. It simply has a serial number that can be read by a scanner, and then the vet enters that serial number into a computer database to find the owner's information. I'm not sure what research you have done about it, but microchips are very safe. I truly caution about believing things found on the internet, as it's typically anecdotal evidence and not scientific evidence. Vets would not recommend a microchip if it were terrible or harmful to the animal, and I would trust your vet over things you read from sources on the internet. Your vet is the expert. You can take Leia into the vet to have it scanned. They will have a microchip scanner. Give the vet's office a call to discuss bringing her in, it may even be able to be done as a tech appointment. I hope this helps!

Hi and thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! All microchips that get implanted are sterilized to prevent infection problems when they are inserted. Once implanted into a pet that microchip would be considered contaminated and would not be suitable to implant into another pet. I hope this answers your question. There are tracker devices that you can place on dog collars but the problem with these is that anyone can take the collar off or the device could fall off or be taken off of the collar. Just do a Google search and we can see the many devices available but I would recommend that you stick with the implantable microchips and keep them registered with a microchip service that houses the data. Always keep your address up to date if you move with that microchip registration service. That way they can contact you if your pet gets lost and is scanned for a chip. It is rare, but the microchip can migrate. Repositioning it may require minor surgery to remove it. Xrays would likely be required to pinpoint its location. Discuss this with your veterinarian. Contact the company's Technical Support department to troubleshoot the issue and to discuss if another chip would be indicated.

I recommend finding a new Vet and having them scan Spring for the microchip number. They can write it down for you. As for the vaccines, I am not sure what advice I can give. Just be sure you are calling the correct Vet office where he was seen. You may have called the wrong one. Be sure he isn't under a different name or spelling or a different last name.
