Why is my bulldog snorting, gagging, and struggling to breathe?

Hi. I am sorry to hear that biggie Paws is having trouble breathing. Unfortunately breathing issues can become an emergency very quickly. Bulldogs do tend to have trouble breathing due to their synotic nares an elongated soft palate. In addition, if they are overweight that contributes even further to breathing problems. If he is actually struggling to breathe, I would recommend you take him to the ER rather than waiting until Monday. He may have an upper respiratory infection, a heart condition, or the respiratory issues that this breed has have become extreme for him. The ER veterinarian will do an examination, and probably some chest x-rays to see if there is any heart condition or primary lung issue. That will help lead us to the correct diagnosis and treatment. There are surgical interventions for the stenitic nares an elongated soft palate that this breed has. That may be in his future if that is what the cause is for his breathing at this time. Small breed dogs are also prone to a condition known as collapsing trachea. This can be diagnosed on x-rays of his neck and chest. I recommend discussing these possibilities with his veterinarian. Hello. It sounds like Bayern has a pretty good upper respiratory infection. The breeder should never have sent him home with you being sick. I would make an appointment with your veterinarian as soon as possible to have the puppy examined. This is very important, especially for a breed that can normally have issues with breathing. If Bruno is unable to breathe, gasping for air, choking, or his gums/tongue or turning blue or pale, this is a medical emergency and care should be sought at your local vet or ER vet ASAP. Some breeds of dog may snore more often, or have trouble breathing. Problems such as asthma, sinus issues, illness, structural problems of the nose or sinuses, etc can all cause difficulty breathing. If this is happening repeatedly, scheduling a veterinary exam is best to rule out any more serious causes and get Bruno some relief.

This is a common issues in brachycephalic dogs like pugs, bulldogs, and frenchies. Many of these breeds require surgery to help assist them to breathe normally so depending on your dogs breed. This may be a consideration. Otherwise I would encourage your dog to sleep on its stomach with its head elevated. Make sure she is not overweight either as this will make the condition worse.

He is a French Bulldog, and some of these breathing problems could be due to the shape of his face. Dogs with the flatter face like him are prone to breathing issues, specifically brachychephalic airway disease. It could also be that he is suffering from allergies, which is why the Benadryl helps for a short period of time. Due to his issues, he needs to see a vet. I would take him into one in the morning. Your dog may have an elongated soft palate that causes an intermittent obstruction of air flow. Usually it is self limiting and doesn’t cause issues but if this is happening consistently there is a surgery that can be performed to help open up the airway.
