Will boiled chicken upset my puppy's stomach if used as a treat?

Occasional treats of plain, unseasoned, boiled chicken is probably ok. However, it is best only to use in special circumstances, like during training sessions. A lot of prepared meats contain large amounts of salt or seasonings that may upset Jasper’s stomach, and some types of seasonings can be harmful to dogs. Try boiling boneless skinless chicken in water, shredding the chicken, and feeding him small amounts as treats. Treats should not make up more than 10 % of his daily caloric intake, and he should be fed a diet appropriate for puppies.

I would advise boiled chicken over roast chicken to use as treats. The roast chicken can have oils, and butters on it which are high in fat and can cause health problems. These health problems can lead to gastrointestinal upset such a pancreatitis.

Mac can have a handful of boiled chicken a couple of times a week as a treat. Boiled chicken on it's own is not a healthy or balanced diet for a puppy, and he needs a puppy formulated food to meet his nutritional requirements for growth. I recommend feeding him Royal Canin. When you do give him the boiled chicken as a treat, make sure it's white meat and there are no bones in it. I hope this helps :-)

How about some boiled white meat chicken (no bones)? Puppies tend to love chicken, and that would be a good healthy treat for him to help him learn commands. You can also try some boiled low fat ground beef in small amounts. I hope this helps, good on you for working on training Scott!

Hello there! I'm sorry to hear about Ziggy's bout of diarrhea. Bits of apple used as training treats is usually fine for dogs, but an entire apple could potentially cause diarrhea as it is high in fiber and water. If he enjoys bits of carrot, then that is probably a fine treat for training. Green beans, bits of turkey hot dog, and small pieces of commercial dog treats are great for training as well. The key is that the training reward is small enough to be eaten in one bite. If they spend more than 1 or 2 seconds chewing and swallowing the treat, it's too big. You want your dog's focus to be on you during training time, so keep the treat small enough that his attention is not taken from you for more than a second a so. When giving treats for non-training times, they can be larger, but since they generally eat a bunch of treats during training, keeping them tiny can prevent an upset stomach. A few general recommendations: stick with well known brands with a good reputation. Look for products made in the USA. Kibble works great for treats and I use Purina Pro Plan chicken or lamb and rice. Dry biscuit type treats usually have less calories and salt. The jerky or moist type treats are fine in moderation (they have more calories and salt usually). Lastly, many dogs really like dehydrated chicken livers and chicken jerky.
