Which probiotic is best and safe for my Yorkie's GI issues and meds?

Forti-Flora (made by Purina) is approved for use in pets with food allergies. Although it is beef-flavored, the flavoring is made from a hydrolyzed protein that cannot trigger any allergic response - so this is my usual "go-to" probiotic choice for a pet with allergies like this.

It is best to get probiotics from your veterinarian as the bacteria in a dog's gastrointestinal system are different from those for humans or cows. If you cannot get those, you can feed small amounts of natural (live) yoghurt with his food.

I like Purina Fortiflora treats - they have the most research behind their product and it is a pretty palatable powder that you sprinkle over food. If you’re looking for a chew VetriScience makes some good products although I’m not quite as familiar with their probiotic.

Regarding probiotics, Purina's Forti Flora is very good. Pets with pancreatitis also benefit from a special low fat diet. The brand Royal Canin makes a food for pets with pancreatitis called Low Fat and it's only 7% fat (for comparison, a normal fat content for normal food is about 25% though this varies brand to brand). A veterinary probiotic, FortiFlora, ProStora or ProViable, may help. You can get any one of them from your veterinarian or in the local Petco. A teaspoon or two of plain yogurt along with a bland diet may also help.

Hello. So sorry Niko Denali is having this issue. I would not call Diagel a probiotic but it is a natural product to treat diarrhea. You can certainly use probiotics along with what he is taking if you want to do that but you need to use a product made for dogs. The best probiotic in my opinion is Fortiflora. I would use that one if you can get it. Sometimes you can find it at Petsmart or Petco and even sometimes Walmart has it. If not you can buy it online at Amazon. You do not need a prescription for it. DO NOT use yogurt or products made for people. Dog "good bacteria" and human are not the same. If you can't get Fortiflora quickly enough than you can use any product made for dogs. As for taking the two antibiotics at once, yes, those are commonly given together and work well together. Hi there. Any antibiotic will cause some transient changes in gut flora. In some patients, this may cause some symptoms of GI upset such as vomiting or diarrhea. If you're concerned, you can certainly give Bailey a probiotic such as Forti-Flora in his food each day while he's taking the doxycycline - this won't hurt anything, and might help to keep his intestinal bacteria from being disrupted as much.
