What food is best for my 8-week-old Pomeranian Papillon puppy?

I would choose a puppy formula in small bite size for Kylie. Make sure to mix her old food in with the new food over a couple of days so you don’t upset her tummy. I think the hills science diet puppy food is a great diet. If Fiametta is doing well on this food I would continue it. Royal Canin also has great diets and is a great alternative if you wanted to switch to another food. Both of these companies have a lot of research behind their diets!! Remember anytime you switch foods to do it gradually over at least 7-10 days time.

Grain free is more hype than science... so it is no necessary to start or worry about tag. Raw diets are not safe as dogs are susceptible of bacterial infections such as salmonella and E. coli like we are, and even you can get it from handling the food...not worth the risk to anyone. Purina, royal canin, and science diet have the most research behind their products for both ingredients and safety. Your new puppy will need to be on a small bites puppy forumla due to his size. Any food within those brands is good quality. They do have some natural formulas for you to choose from also

Any food that has an AAFCO certification label on the bag has been tested to be well balanced. And any food that is labeled for puppies is designed to support growth. So I would go with a small breed, puppy dog food with an AAFCO label. I really like the following brands: Royal Canin, Hill's Science diet, Evo, and Eukanuba. Nala is very cute! She needs a puppy formulated food, and brands I recommend include Royal Canin, Hill's Science Diet, Purina ProPlan, and Iams. Puppies require higher amounts of protein, calcium, and calories than adult dogs to grow properly, and a puppy formulated food will provide that for her. Go out to a pet store and get a puppy food for her now. She should be fed three times a day until she is six months once, once in the morning, at noon, and the evening. The bag of food will tell you her daily recommended allotment of food, and divide that into three equal feedings. Once she is six months old, she can be fed twice a day, once in the morning and once in the evening. Good luck, I hope this helps!

The food needs to be slowly transition over 7-10 days introducing the new food in about 20% increment every other day. For detail, contact your veterinarian on how to transition the food. Recommended brands are Royal Canin, Hill's Science Diet, Purina Pro Plan, and Iams. Choose one, and stick with it until about one year of age. After that, transition to an adult formula for small breeds from the same brand. Void feeding anything other than the dogs food and a few treats made specifically for dogs. Hopes this helps!

This is a great question, and one which does not have a simple answer, as there is no one pet food that is best for all dogs, even within a specific breed. Certain types of specialty dog foods, including grain free diets may be linked to heart disease in dogs, so I recommend talking to your vet about potential risks for Lilly and her sibling. I recommend a small breed adult food until they reach 7-8 years old, and then switching over to a senior formula slowly over the course of a week.
