Good question! I recommend either Royal Canin Puppy food or Hill's Science Diet puppy food. Both of these companies do a lot of research and quality control and they utilize the expertise of veterinary nutritionists in formulating their diets. If you do transition Jax from one diet to another please make sure to do it gradually (over 4-5 days) to ensure he doesn't get an upset stomach. Yes, puppies need to eat a puppy formula until they are 1 year old. Large breed puppies (who will mature to 55lbs or more) NEED to eat a large breed puppy formula. Shimar is so cute!! I think as long as your are feeding a high quality commercial puppy food then she is getting all the nutrients she needs. My favorites are science diet, royal canin, Iams, and Purina. All of these have been around for a long time and have several studies to back up their product. I hope this helps!

Puppies, unlike adults, need a higher amount of calcium and other minerals in their diet for their growing bones. Thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! Feeding twice daily is fine as long as Caster is receiving his recommend amount of calories per day. I recommend the majority of his diet consists of the Royal Canin as that has the proper balance of vitamins and minerals for a growing dog and the human diet does not. The Royal Canin should have a place on the label for recommended feeding amounts for his age and weight. Kisses to Caster!

Could you post a picture of the bag of dog food? Or a link to the product? I can't find anything when I search "Petco brand puppy food". Or take a picture of the feeding guidelines on the bag. Each type of dog food will have slightly different feeding guidelines.

I recommend that you go with a well-known brand that has a good track record of high-quality food that is well-tested. The brand you choose will depend on how you'd prefer to acquire it and how much money you'd like to spend. You can find quality food at all price points. On the lower price side, you've got brands that you can find at the grocery store, like Purina One. Middle-of-the-road brands can be found at big-box pet stores (e.g. Petco), and include Iams, Eukanuba, Science Diet, Wellness and Royal Canin. Higher end foods can also be found at the big-box stores, but smaller company brands may be easier to find at small, private pet stores, like Innova and Merrick. Whichever you choose, be sure to change Joey's diet slowly over a week's time to prevent stomach upset.
