How often should I bathe my Cocker Spaniel puppy to avoid dry skin?

Pet's info: Dog | Cocker Spaniel | Male | unneutered | 2 months and 23 days old | 7.5 lbs

How often should I bathe my Cocker spaniel puppy? Is it okay to bathe him once a week or is it a bit too frequent? We clean him with a wet towel everyday though.

Once a week is probably okay although bathing this often may lead to dry skin. If Coconis not getting dirty you may want to just use the towel and bathe every 3-4 weeks. I would not recommend bathing more often than weekly.

It's not recommended to bath a puppy before the age of 3 months unless absolutely necessary. After the age of 3 months it is recommended to bath not more than once a month. Everyday is a big no, it will cause your puppy severe skin problems.

Dogs do not need frequent baths unlike us humans. Their fur and hair have natural oils that can be stripped away if bathed frequently. I'd say bathing every 1-2 months should be sufficient.

Hello and thank you for reaching out to Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach. Your puppy should not need a bath unless she becomes excessively dirty from being outside. If you want to bathe her, I recommend no more than once every 2 weeks, using a puppy-safe shampoo and taking care not to get soap in her eyes. I hope this is helpful!

You are bathing them quite a lot, dogs coats quickly get stripped of natural oils that help the skin. I would only wash a dog every 2 to 3 months unless they are very smelly or have a skin condition requiring medicated shampoo. You could be damaging their skin barrier.

8 weeks old is the minimum age to begin bathing a puppy. Use a pet approved shampoo for puppies sensitive skin. She can be bathed every 6-8 weeks. Hi there and thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! It is true that over bathing may cause dryness and can be irritating to the skin. However, sometimes dogs with skin allergies and bathed very frequently and it actually helps them. So you may need to monitor Bear and see if frequent bathing causes any dryness or redness to his skin. There are several products on the market that are more like dry shampoo or mousse that you could brush through Bear's coat to eliminate some of the dirt and odor. If necessary you can also bathe Bear every one to two weeks, but please do it less frequently if you notice any dryness or redness of the skin related to bathing.

Generally it's recommended to only bath a dog once a week because bathing can dry out thier skin. But sometimes they need a bath more frequently and that's ok. Use a Mild shampoo (oatmeal) not flea shampoo if she needs more frequent baths.
