My anxious dog has ear infection signs and gets aggressive when I clean. What should I do?

That is especially true if if Buddy's ear infection is severe and actually not sensitive to the ear cleanser or antibiotics used initially which would be required if they as I recommend that you have Buddy evaluated by your veterinarian for further assessment and treatment. Your veterinarian would be able to check what type of infection is present and treat accordingly. Usually this resolves with topical therapy. Good luck and have a good day!

This is likely an ear infection and I am afraid that there is likely an underlying allergy causing him to scratch a lot and continue to cause further trauma to the ear. I highly recommend that you have him evaluated as soon as possible as this is likely causing him a lot of discomfort. They would be able to diagnose this and start therapy. Medications such as steroids may help decrease the itch. You may use the e-collar to prevent further self-trauma. Best of luck!

You can try to use an ear cleanser in the meantime which you can buy online or at your local pet store though if an infection is present this may help but will not resolve the issue and appropriate therapy for an infection is needed which is based on the organism present. I like malAcetic ear cleanser. This is based on cytology and culture sometimes. Good luck and have a great day!

Hi, thanks for using PetCoach! Poor Boo! The most common reason for extra moisture and wax build up in the ear is an ear infection. Ear infections are caused by bacteria and/or yeast build up which can be from allergies or just extra moisture. Ideally Boo should see your Vet to have the cause identified and appropriate drops prescribed to get rid of the infection. Ear infections are treated topically in dogs and cats. You can try this ear cleaner. I would clean out the ear every other day for 2 weeks. If there is no improvement or he worsens he should see your Vet. I also attached a video on how to clean the ears. Considering a severe infection is suspected and he is having other problems, it's best to take him a vet for an evaluation. Severe infections need prescription medication in order for it to be adequately treated. Your vet can sedate Charlie if needed, determine the cause of the infection and prescribe treatment that is more effective and easier to administer. For now, I reccomend stopping the use of hydrogen peroxide, as this can make things much worse. I hope that helps and he gets better soon.

If it didn’t help the infection, she may have a bacteria that is resistant to the antibiotic. I recommend taking her back to the vet for a culture of the bacteria in her ear to determine what medication will treat it. Good luck and kisses to Bailey!
