Puppy had parvo. Can I safely adopt her without a parvo-free test?

I'm glad your girl is feeling better. :) If she has recovered and is now eating and drinking normally, acting good, and no longer vomiting, then she should not need any special care from here on out - she can go back to normal life. There should be no concern with using the fan or air conditioner, bathing her, or letting her sleep on the floor. She can be vaccinated as normal now that she's no longer sick. And yes, it's fine for her to go outside and resume her normal daily walk routine.

When dogs survived to Parvovirus usually develops an constant immunity against it which can prevent further reinfection. I would say that the absence of clinical signs would be a way to say that he 100% survived it.

I'm glad to hear Nova is responding to treatment. To answer your questions: No, she will not always test positive. Once the infection is cleared, she will test negative. Most vets will not test again for parvo unless the puppy seems to be doing something unexpected. If the puppy seems to be recovering normally, it's not likely they will retest. I do caution though that some vets may have different protocols. They determine when a pet can go home by their behavior. In general, once a puppy is eating and drinking on their own, seems bright and is not longer vomiting or having severe diarrhea, they can usually go home. They must also have normal levels of protein in their blood. I certainly recommend to discuss your concerns with your veterinarian. They can keep you updated on Nova's progress. Most vets will want a puppy to display signs of recovery for at least 1-2 days before going home. I hope Nova continues to do well!

The typical test for Parvo in cats tests for the virus itself, so if the test was negative a month ago, then Wendy should be okay to reintroduce to the other adult in the household. However, there are a few different type of tests for parvo in cats, so I would recommend you check the shelter you got Wendy from to confirm. I would not recommend to get the puppy who did not get Parvo. It’s possible that he may still break with this highly contagious virus. For the puppy that survived Parvo, he will likely be fine. Long term, most dogs experience no organ damage or side effects. This puppy is still shedding the Parvo virus and will continue to shed the virus for 6 months in it’s feces. The virus will live for roughly 1 year in the soil. That means you cannot take this puppy out in public where it may expose other puppies who are not vaccinated for at least 6 months. That also means your yard will be contaminated for at least 1.5 years minimum so you cannot have any dogs over to play who are not fully vaccinated or else they run the risk of contracting the virus. You don’t want to harm any other pets. He also cannot play with any dogs who are not fully vaccinated for 6 months. The vaccine is highly effective and it’s unlikely that a fully vaccinated pet will get sick (but keep in mind nothing is a 100% guarantee). But I am hoping that your parents have vaccinated her since she was sick? The vaccine also gets distemper which is also contagious. If your parents have never vaccinated their dog I wouldn't bring Kona over there. Even if she is in the crate the virus is all over the house, where ever the dog went. If their dog is vaccinated then Kona should be fine there. I hope this helps!

Thanks for using PetCoach. Depending on the severity of the couse of disease, it can take some puppies several weeks to fully recover. Be sure to feed the food her vet recommends and offer small amounts of food frequently. Do not allow her to eat all she wants at one time. Zoe may be contagious to other puppies for up to 3-4 weeks so should be kept away from other dogs and pups. Depending on how she is doing the vet may recommend vaccination anywhere from 1-3 weeks after she starts eating. She cannot contract Parvo again but does need to be vaccinated against other diseases.
