Is my 30-day-old puppy too young to learn basic commands like sit?

You can start training a puppy as young as 8 weeks to do basic commands such as sit, lay down, and stay. Puppies have a short attention span, however, so training sessions should be kept to 15 minutes max. They can have a couple of training sessions a day.

Thank you for submitting your question regarding your new puppy. Dogs do not gain physical control over their urination and defecation until 4-5 months of age. At this stage, you are just trying to be consistent and create predictable routines for him. This will teach him what to expect and where he should go to the bathroom. However, he is much too young at this point. As far as walking on a leash, this takes time for puppies to learn as well. Most are more comfortable with this by 3-4 months of age. Most puppies can sit on command by around 8-10 weeks of age. Continue to work with him and be patient. He will learn. As far as exercise, playing with toys with keep him occupied at this age. I think spending 30-60 minutes with her each day is good for general puppy training. You may have to split the times up in to smaller intervals to help keep her attention. As far as what you want to train her on all depends on what all you want her to do. I would definitely teach her to sit, stay, and lay. You can also teach her to properly walk on a leash. Some other tricks like shake and roll over, etc are also fun to teach. You can easily find the methods to teach them these easy commands at home. She is able to start learning immediately - the most important skills are sit, wait, come and 'leave it'/drop. With these you can attract her attention and focus and ask her to put down anything undesirable she may pick up whilst out walking. Be sure to use positive reinforcement and encouragement throughout training and do not attempt to punish her if she is confused

At two months your puppy is still a very young baby, comparable more to a 1 1/2 year old child. He will not be able to concentrate for long. Best make sure he has all his vaccinations and once that is done book a puppy kinder garden or school with him. Until then, just teach him the word "no" for things he should not do. That is plenty to learn for such a small baby.

Hi, thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! Duke is very young. At 4 weeks he should still be with his mom and litter mates. He is very much like a human baby at 4 weeks-play a little and sleep 15-20 hours per day, poop and pee. At 4 weeks he doesn't quite have the ability to be trained yet. I would be patient, let him be a baby, cuddle with him and start easy training in another month or so. Good luck!
