Unspayed cat bleeding bright red during heat. Is it an emergency?

We do not normally see a bloody discharge in cats with heat cycles like we do in dogs. For this reason I would recommend an exam by your veterinarian. We could have blood coming from the reproductive tract from infection or a tumor, or we could have blood from the urinary tract which could be due to infection, inflammation, bladder stones, bladder tumors. The vet will do an exam and may recommend a urine test and an x-ray or ultrasound of the abdomen to help determine the cause of the blood.

Cats do not bleed during their heat cycle which makes me thing the bleeding is unrelated to her being in heat. it could be due to a urinary infection for example, i would recommend taking her to your vet in order to get it checked and treated.

This sounds like she may be in labour if she has not been neutered and requires urgent veterinary attention at this stage - an emergency c-section may be required. Other possibilities may be severe infection or prolapse which would also require treatment urgently before major blod loss

I would be extremely concerned that Max has a pyometra, which is an infection of the uterus that is fatal without treatment. Cats do not bleed when they are in heat, and this is not normal. This is something that needs to be checked out by a vet immediately, please bring her into one now. Best of luck.

Vaginal bleeding in a non-cycling female is considered abnormal. If your cat is acting fine otherwise and does not appear to be in distress, this may be something that can wait until tomorrow. However, if you feel the vaginal bleeding is excessive (versus just a red discharge) enough to where blood loss is a true consideration, this is not something that should wait until morning. There is a chance that there was some trauma to the bladder area while removing the uterus which is located just above the cervix. Some light bleeding can be expected to occur for 1-3 days after surgery but copious amounts of blood or prolonged bleeding should be considered abnormal. I would recommend either taking your cat back to the previous veterinarian, since he/she did the surgery, for a follow-up visit for further care. Or if the trust has been broken with this vet, you can get kitty seen with another expert for an exam and potential urinalysis to ensure there isn't a UTI present that could explain the symptoms that mentioned. As long as there is an active flow of urine and no outward signs of illness (vomiting, diarrhea, bloated abdomen) then this sounds like a relatively non-emergency type situation that can be hopefully be resolved with medical treatment, if any.

It is likely blood from her going into her first heat cycle, which will not hurt her. Around 6 months of age is when cats can go into their first heat cycle. I would recommend having her spayed soon as the risk of mammary cancer increases with unspayed females.
