Are Tobramycin eye drops safe for my cat with kidney disease?

Updated on September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Cat | Domestic Longhair | Male | neutered | 6 years and 4 months old | 12 lbs

I have a hypercalcemic cat on bi-phosphates that was prescribed Tobramycin Ophthalmic Solution 0.3% and I'm reading warnings that this can cause kidney issues and something about calcium chelation and I'm concerned that since he is predisposed to CKD/stones, etc that these eye drops may harm him? Should I be concerned?

I think you may have found information on aminoglycoside antibiotics in general - I cannot find any reports of topical ophthalmic tobramycin causing either kidney disease or calcium chelation in veterinary patients. Aminoglycoside antibiotics might cause these side effects when taken orally or given injectably.
