How do I switch my 3-month-old Persian kitten's food safely?

You can switch their food but you want to slowly transition them to the new food. This means you want to start with mixing only a small amount of the new food in with the old food for a few days then over a 10 day period, increase the amount of new food while decreasing the amount of old food until you are just feeding the new food around day 10. By slowly transitioning them to a new food, it decreases the risk of causes an upset stomach. I hope this helps!

How lovely of you to take on these kittens! Yes, you are correct they should be on kitten food and should stay on kitten food until they are one year of age. Purina kibble is a great food, just get the kitten version. To switch them to it, mix 75% old food and 25% new food, and feed them that for 3-4 days. After that time period, give them 50% old food and 50% new food mixed together. Again, feed that for 3-4 days. Then mix together 25% old food and 75% new food, and feed for 3-4 days. Finally, then give them 100% new food. This will help slowly transition them to the kitten food. If you see diarrhea at any point, add a little less new food and a little more old food to settle their stomach. Once the diarrhea is gone, continue the transition. I hope this helps!

Congrats on your new kitten! I have a Persian as well, and they are lovely cats. Royal Canin has a brand of wet kitten food, and you can try that to see if doesn't give her diarrhea and satisfies her desire to have wet food. You can mix that wet food with her dry food to see if she eats the dry food better. I hope this helps!

One way to try to transition Sassy to a dry food is to gradually decrease the amount of canned food and leave a bowl of the dry food out at all times of possible. Decrease the amount of canned food by 25% every 3-5 days. She will eventually start eating the dry food. It is important to feed her a high quality dry kitten food. I recommend Iams or Royal Canin. The vomiting could be due to many things. Parasites or dietary indiscretion are common in young kittens. I recommend to have her feces checked for worms by her veterinarian. During this time of rapid growth and maturation of their bones, it is very important to choose a complete and balanced diet with the appropriate levels of nutrients. Diets formulated for growth include those labeled for kittens or “all life stages.” Canned foods promote increased water consumption in cats, and feeding dry food exclusively or in combination with canned is also acceptable. Offering a kitten with a variety of textures early in life can be helpful in minimizing the chance of having a picky eater. Regardless of diet selection, always make diet changes gradually by mixing the old and new foods together over five to seven days and make sure to carefully measure the appropriate portions of your cat’s food. Abrupt changes have a greater likelihood of resulting in vomiting and/or diarrhea.
