Found a stray kitten with eye discharge. Is it contagious to my cats?

Updated on September 23rd, 2025

This kitten showed up in my backyard this morning. Has eye secretions it seems, and something black on its nose. He ate well, though, but seems lethargic at times. Would you be able to tell me if he's contagious from the picture? I have indoor cats that I walk in the yard that may come in contact.

Unfortunately, without a physical exam, this cannot be determined. The discharge may be due to bacterial or viral infection and the black may be dirt or debris. An exam with your veterinarian would be needed to diagnose any infection or medical conditions.
The safest option would be to keep him/her separated from other cats and wash your hands before and after handling the kitten.
