How to stop my long-haired cat from throwing up hairballs daily?

Updated on September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Cat | Domestic Longhair | Male | neutered | 5 years and 1 month old | 11 lbs

My 5 year old neutered male cat Khaos has been throwing up hairballs about twice a day which varies for over 2 months. The hairballs are about 4 to 6 inches in length and as round as my thumb. He is on dry cat food free feed. He and his brother are both long hair and groom each other. I have not seen the brother throw up hairballs.

I'd put them both on a hairball formula food, which will help cut down on hairball formation. In addition, I would brush them both daily, which will help the amount of hair Khaos ingests when he grooms his brother. I hope this helps!
