What can I do for my cat's hairball vomiting, lethargy, appetite loss?

I strongly recommend getting your cat seen by your vet right away. Lethargy is a worrying sign after such an incident and she must continue to eat or she can develop liver disease in a matter of days. There may be more hair that cannot get back out or that may be causing an intestinal blockage. If this is the case, without treatment it can be life-threatening. Your vet will do an exam, x-rays, possibly lab work, and base don these results will be better able to tell you what is wrong and how best to treat it.

It is pretty normal to regurgitate hair balls once in two weeks. Keep feeding the Hairball prevention formula. It actually helps with eliminating most of the hair via the feces, but a long haired cat, especially if she is a meticulate groomer, just may ingest too many hairs for this to solely happen and therefore she has hair balls to get rid off also.You can also get some hairball remedy (a malt and oil paste) from your vet or a petshop, which also helps with the elimination of hairballs. If you brush your kitty often , she will ingest less hair as well.

Usually, if cats regurgitate undigested dry food they are eating their food way too fast. You may want to get a feeding toy into which you put his dry food ration (do not free feed dry food) two to three times daily. This way Soya has to work for her food by playing around with the toy which dispenses the dry food in individual pieces thus preventing your cat from eating too much too fast. As for preventing hair balls there are several things you can and should do: 1) brush/comb your cat regularly, removing any loose hair from its fur as well as mattes, before they get too big. 2) buy some hair ball remedy paste from either your vet or a pet shop and feed it to your cat according to the instructions on the tube. This helps prevent formation of hairballs. 3) Next time you buy dry food pick the type that specifies "Hair ball Prevention" on the bag. This should make you and your kitty happy!

Thank you for submitting your question regarding Lilly. A longhaired cat should only produce 3-4 hairballs per year. Any more than that is considered abnormal. If her initial blood panel came back normal, I typically recommend a secondary panel that checks for pancreatitis, a disease known as pancreatic exocrine insufficiency as well as cobalamin and folate levels. This can reveal the cause of the vomiting or give some treatment options for her. Inflammatory bowel disease is common cause of chronic vomiting. This will typically result in a low cobalamin levels. It can not be diagnosed without intestinal biopsies, but those are very invasive. An abdominal ultrasound can give a lot of information and rule out other causes of vomiting. If I suspect this to be the case, I will treat the patient with a prescription hydrolyzed diet to help decrease inflammation and sometimes medication as well. I hope this information helps!

I think that it is time to take Antonio in to see a veterinarian. He might have eaten something else which is causing an obstruction in his intestines. It is rare, but there have been some cats that need medical (or even surgical) intervention for a very large hair ball. If he is lethargic, it is time for him to be seen. Thanks for the images. It doesn't appear to be blood. Blood in vomitus is usually much darker. That appears to be a mix of chewed or partially digested food, bile and hair. Monitor for continued vomiting, lethargy or loss of appetite. These are symptoms that should be addressed by your veterinarian. Consider a short fast, maybe 12 hours, then offer a bland diet in small, frequent amounts for a day or two. Transition slowly to the regular diet afterwards. If Luna will allow, increase brushing or grooming to decrease the amount of hair ingested. You can also use Laxatone or PetroMalt paste to help her pass hairballs.Find either in the local Petco.

Hello, Oliver may indeed be working on reliving a hairball. However, other causes for this may include a tooth infection or an upset GI tract. If he continues to do this, develops vomiting, a decreased appetite, diarrhea, or lethargy then he should be evaluated by a veterinarian. Hope this helps and best of luck.
