My spayed dog is licking and leaking blood. Is this an emergency?

As long as Cocoa is acting normally otherwise you can probably wait to go to the veterinarian first thing tomorrow morning. However, if she shows any other abnormal signs then I would recommend going to the emergency veterinarian tonight. She may have a urinary tract infection, which although uncomfortable, is not an emergency to be seen immediately. There's a very small chance this could be related to something called stump pyometra which is an infection of the uterine stump in spayed female dogs. A stump pyometra can be an emergency, however usually would result in lethargy, fever, or inappetance. If the area is leaking a clear/light pinkish fluid, that makes me thing she has a seroma. A seroma is a collection of fluid, usually occurring at an incision site. This is not a medical emergency, so I would wait to take Lily into the vet until Monday. Keep her quiet and rested until then, no running, jumping, or playing. Take her out to toilet on a lead only, and bring her right back in when done. I would keep an eye on the swelling, and if pus starts coming out, or it becomes red, swollen, or warm to the touch, then I would bring her into a vet right away.

Poor girl. No this is not normal. She likely has suffered some type of injury and needs to have this area inspected by your vet and treated. She may need stitches, antibiotics and anti-inflammatory medicine. I hope Lil One gets better soon. You can try wrapping a clean t-shirt or bandage material around her to help stabilize the area if you can’t get her in right away and it continues to bleed. Best of luck and take care.

Hi and thanks for your request. The wound seems fairly dry even though there is some discharge. The margins of it look healthy as well. I guess that the discharge is minimal but if not (from the pic I cannot assess it, then a check up would be required ). Her general status would be very important as well to decide whether she needs to be seen or not; if she is painful, lethargic, inappetent, if she has any vomiting, diarrhoea, then a check up would be ideal. Hope this could help. At the moment there is no need for a check up in my opinion. Licking should be discouraged with any possible means. plasters and soft inflatable collars (donut-like) may be useful.

This is a medical emergency, and Lola has to see a vet now. I would be concerned she has a pyometra, and that is fatal without treatment. Do not let her problems around other dogs prevent her from getting the help she needs, just her into a vet. You can keep her away from other dogs while waiting to see the vet, but given the situation, I suspect you will be taken in immediately for the vet. Please take her into a vet immediately.

I would have Hennessey seen by a vet immediately. I would be very concerned that this heavy bleeding, lethargy, and bloating is caused by a pyometra. A pyometra is a serous infection of the uterus that is fatal without treatment. Using a physical exam, blood tests, urinalysis, and x-rays, the vet can diagnose if she does have a pyometra and can treat her for it. Should she have one, spaying her is part of the recommended treatment. Please take Hennessey into an ER vet or find a vet on call to see her now.

Keep an e-collar (cone) on her to prevent licking. Restrict activity as much as possible. As long as there is no active bleeding, Lilo can likely wait until your veterinarian is available. If there is active bleeding, discharge, lethargy or fever then have her seen at the nearest veterinary ER.
