What are the signs to tell if my rescued female cat is spayed?

It can be difficult to know if they've been spayed or not if you don't have any medical records. You can request that the vet shave her belly to look for a spay scar, but they can be very faint if she was spayed at a very young age. If she still has signs of heat, then either she hasn't been spayed or there is some ovarian tissue still present inside her. You can have a hormone test (AMH) done to confirm that there still is ovarian tissue and then you know she needs surgery to remove it. Or the vet can just go to surgery to go look for it.

If she was spayed at an animal shelter, sometimes you can also see a small tattoo in the ventral abdomen next to the spay incision. I would consider having her evaluated by your veterinarian as they can both check that but also check for possible reasons for the blood such as a urinary tract infection. Good luck and best wishes!

Female cats will only mate when they are in heat, and they show signs of being in heat by being very vocal, affectionate, lifting her tail up, and wanting to go outside all the time to find males to mate with which to mate. If Mochi isn't show any signs of being in heat, then she will not have mated. Should she be in heat, there really isn't a way to tell if she mated or not. You could see some dried saliva on the back of her neck, as males may grab there with their mouth when mating. Otherwise, I would wait four weeks, then take her into the vet for an exam. The vet will be able to diagnose if she is pregnant or not, which would be very likely if she mated. I hope this helps!

You can try feeling her belly for a spay scar - this would usually feel like a line of firmer tissue just beneath the skin, along the center line of the abdomen near the belly button. In some spayed females this is fairly easy to feel, but in others it can be very subtle and difficult to identify. If you can't feel anything, I would suggest having Baby checked by your vet - he/she may be able to feel a scar, since we're used to checking for them :) If there does not appear to be a scar, then you could opt to have a blood test done by your vet to see if she is spayed or not, or wait to see if she comes into heat and have her spayed then if she does

If you can I would wait until she does go into season. You will definitively see behavioural signs of it! I would consider a surgery just to check it rather invasive and expensive as well!!! It does sound and look like Eevee is in heat. Increased vocalization, ‘presenting’ her genitalia /arching her back, and often increased affection are typical signs of estrus/heat in cats which typically first starts after 6 months of age. Each heat cycle lasts around 5-6 days and unspayed cats typically come back into heat every 2-3 weeks. The ASPCA and many shelters offer low cost spay options such as mobile spay/neuter clinics that may be an option. If not, there is nothing that you need to do other than keep her away from intact male cats unless you want kittens in about 2 months’ time! Good luck!

Hi. Without a hands on exam, it’s impossible to definitively determine if this cat is spayed or not. Your veterinarian should be able to determine this by shaving some hair away from the mid abdomen to look for a Spay scar and probably a tattoo that indicates she has been sterilized. Cats are only pregnant for 9 weeks. By 4-5 weeks, it is pretty easy to determine pregnancy during a physical exam. Have your veterinarian examine her and look for the scar and tattoo. Thank you
