My senior overweight cat has accidents. Can medication help?

Renal failure could be the cause of excessive urination, on top of that urinary infection could resemble incontinence. Hi there. It's possible that Plaxico may have a urinary tract infection, as this is a common problem in diabetic cats and also a common cause of peeing in in appropriate places. It's also possible that his diabetes is simply not as well-regulated as we would like, which can result in drinking and urinating more than normal and can also sometimes cause cats to have accidents. I would recommend taking Plaxico to the vet for a check-up. He will likely need a urinalysis and blood work to check for infection and see if his diabetes is appropriately regulated on his current dose of insulin. If a problem is found, treating it may help to resolve the behavior of peeing on the couch.

You should take Kizzie back to a veterinarian for a proper thorough exam, with a urinalysis and blood work. Diabetes does not often have obvious signs, nor does kidney disease. Both of those can be ruled out with blood tests and urinalysis. Most cats with a UTI do not need antibiotics as most times it is stress induced. All the more it is important to verify that bacteria are involved before prescribing antibiotics. You may want to get a second opinion from another veterinarian.

I strongly recommend you source urine collection cat litter and submit a urine sample for analysis to rule out crystals, infection, inflammation or diabetes all of which can aggravate incontinence. Acupuncture may help if no medical complications are identified

I would add an anti-inflammatory to help reduce inflammation in the urinary tract. Also, if x-rays or an abdominal ultrasound have not been performed and he is still exhibiting these symptoms, I would have these additional diagnostics performed as he may have bladder stones or urethral stones. I would recommend having a comprehensive blood panel run on pepper to rule these conditions out. I would also have his urine tested as part of a full workup. Hello and thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! From your description of signs, I would strongly suspect that Flynn may have diabetes. This very commonly causes increased thirst and urination, sticky urine (from the sugar in the urine) and weight loss. Other common causes of weight loss and increased thirst and urination in cats are kidney disease and thyroid disease. I have seen many cats that have more than one of these diseases at the same time. I would strongly recommend taking Flynn to a veterinarian for blood work and urinalysis. This will be the first step in diagnosing his actual condition so that you know how to treat him.
