How to help my senior cat gain weight with kidney and thyroid issues?

Adding in the wet food while providing her regular dry diet available as much as she wants should help increase her calorie count some. It is common for cats to start to lose weight as they age as their nutritional needs tend to change when they hit their senior years, plus absorption of nutrients overall tends to decrease with age as well. Mixing the wet into the dry may encourage her to eat a bit more and increase calorie count which should help. Your vet can also monitor her weight/BCS (most vets will let you weigh your pets at no charge) to make sure she is gaining/maintaining a healthier weight with the changes.

When an senior cat is eating more frequently yet losing weight, this can be a sign of hyperthyroidism. With hyperthyroidism, the thyroid gland is secreting too much hormone which causes an increase in the pets metabolism and subsequent weight loss. Have your vet check Hopes T4 levels to see if she is hyperthyroid and in need of medication to help stabilize her hormones so that she doesn't continue to waste away. This is easily diagnosed and treated with medication (i.e. Methimazole). Your vet will also want to run baseline bloodwork on your pet to make sure no other disease processes are there.

This kind of dramatic weight loss is almost always due to an underlying medical condition. Ask your vet if he has checked Frida Katio's thyroid levels to rule out hyperthyroidism and performed full body X-rays to scan for any masses. He should also perform full mouth dental X-rays to rule out any dental disease that may be preventing her from eating. If all of these diseases have been ruled out, you could consider switching Frida to a higher calorie canned food such as Hills Science Diet AD.

I am so sorry that Alex has been diagnosed with Kidney disease and it sounds like possibly hyperthyroidism. Unfortunately, these two diseases can be difficult to battle. I would talk to your vet about starting him on an appetite stimulant. You can also have fluids given to him under his skin on a daily or every other day basis to help keep the kidney values down to help make him feel better. I would have your vet recheck the thyroid and kidney values if his have been on medicine for awhile to ensure it is working properly and there isn't something else going on. You could also look for an alternative vet to seek acupuncture to help stimulate appetite. I hope this helps!

If Rockie's thyroid level is controlled, then his weight should remain stable. There is a special diet for treating hyperthyroidism, but it is used instead of medication NOT in addition to treatment. You can certainly discuss a diet change with your veterinarian. If Rockie is on an adult food, he may do better on a senior food. And if he is on a dry food, he may do better on a canned food. Most of the premium brands (Blue Buffalo, Canidae, Orijen, Royal Canin) should be fine. Stay away from store or discount brands as these typically contain low quality ingredients and more fillers. Choose a canned food that comes from the can looking like a hockey puck. It should have a named protein source of animal origin. If you must feed dry, choose a grain free diet. Stay away from foods that are minced, diced or have sauces/gravies. these are usually higher in carb content which your cat does not need.

It sounds like you and you vet have a good plan for your kitty. Depending on any symptoms other than weight loss and his most recent blood work, adding on a phosphate binder and antacid may help. The antacid would be helpful if his appetite is low. If he has high blood pressure, then medications for that may be needed, especially if your vet suspects it could be leading to protein loss in the urine (a cause for weight loss in cats with CKD).
