What can I do for my senior cat with CKD who is losing weight?

My 17-year-old male Himalayan cat has Stage 3 CKD. He has a prescription diet and receives subcutaneous fluids and B-12 injections. His weight has gone from 8.0 pounds to 6.4 pounds in 4 months. He was on mirtazapine for two weeks and weighed 7.0 pounds. I took him off of it because he was having all kinds of negative side effects, but then he lost weight. Other than the weight loss, he still appears to have a fairly normal quality of life, and I give him NutraCal as a treat. What else can I do?

It sounds like you and you vet have a good plan for your kitty. Depending on any symptoms other than weight loss and his most recent blood work, adding on a phosphate binder and antacid may help. The antacid would be helpful if his appetite is low. If he has high blood pressure, then medications for that may be needed, especially if your vet suspects it could be leading to protein loss in the urine (a cause for weight loss in cats with CKD).

I'm sorry to hear that Mischief is sick. Since he is on a prescription diet for chronic kidney disease, I'm assuming that he has been diagnosed with this problem at some point in the past - weight loss is a common symptom of kidney disease in cats, and unfortunately is likely to get worse over time as chronic kidney disease is a progressive illness.

Non-regenerative anemia (meaning a decreased red blood cell count, with no corresponding increase in reticulocytes) is also commonly associated with chronic kidney disease, since the kidneys are responsible for making erythropoeitin, which is the hormone that drives red blood cell production by the bone marrow. So I'm afraid that everything you're describing can be explained by advanced chronic kidney disease.

There is no cure for this problem; we can only manage it with medication to keep the cat comfortable as long as possible, but it's a progressive disease that will eventually be terminal. I would recommend talking with your vet about whether there are things that you could add to Mischief's current treatment plan to help with some of these issues - there are many medications that can be used in cats with this problem which may help with the weight loss and anemia, at least for a while.

Unfortunately, that is often the case. They continue to lose weight and waste away with kidney failure. As long as he is doing his normal things I would not be overly concerned at this point. If you want to start him on an immune booster you can do that. I would suggest Imuquin. Renal failure often causes cats to lose weight. The waste products that build up in the blood because the kidneys can't properly eliminate them cause nausea and gastritis (inflammation in the stomach) and sometimes even ulcers in the mouth. Talk to your vet about trying some medications to manage these conditions - either omeprazole or famotadine are often helpful, as well as the anti-nausea drug Cerenia. Also the drug mirtazipine can be used to help stimulate his appetite. Unfortunately it sounds like he has multiple problems that may be difficult to manage concurrently. I'd also consider running a bacterial culture of the nasal discharge to try to focus the antibiotic therapy and ensure that an effective drug is being used.

Cats that are losing protein through their kidneys can lose weight. With your cat's medical history, I would recommend having him examined by the vet. Blood work will check the kidneys and urinalysis will look for extra protein in the urine. The blood work can also screen for other issues that can cause weight loss.

Adding in the wet food while providing her regular dry diet available as much as she wants should help increase her calorie count some. It is common for cats to start to lose weight as they age as their nutritional needs tend to change when they hit their senior years, plus absorption of nutrients overall tends to decrease with age as well. Mixing the wet into the dry may encourage her to eat a bit more and increase calorie count which should help. Your vet can also monitor her weight/BCS (most vets will let you weigh your pets at no charge) to make sure she is gaining/maintaining a healthier weight with the changes.

Hello, sorry to hear about Kit Kat. Things you can do include offering plenty of household enrichment to include toys, cat trees, and scratching posts. Make sure that the litter box is in a quiet private place for her. You can use pheromone diffusers such as Feliway sprays to calm her down as well. Ultimately, Kit Kat should also be evaluated by a veterinarian if these signs do not resolve or if they get worse as she could have an underlying disease which is causing her weight loss and diarrhea. Why is my cat with kidney disease having diarrhea and losing weight?

I'm sorry to hear that Puss hasn't been feeling well. His further weight loss with decreasing muscle mass could be related to progression of kidney disease, or could be associated with other conditions such as hyperthyroidism, cancer, inflammatory bowel disease, among others. Diarrhea is not commonly associated with kidney problems, however, and could be due to other gastrointestinal issues from diet changes, parasites, inflammatory bowel disease, cancer, or other problems. Regardless, it sounds as though another trip to the vet is in order to recheck his kidney values on blood testing, as well as additional diagnostic testing to try to determine the cause of diarrhea. From there, your vet will be able to come up with the best treatment plan possible to help Puss maintain as good of a quality of life as possible. I hope this helps and that all goes well.

How to help my senior cat lose weight safely after constipation?

Oh my, Kitty is a very handsome boy! I love his socks on his feet, so cute. Feeding him canned food watered down is an excellent way to get him to lose weight. Canned food has lower calories than dry kibble, and the added benefit is that it will get extra moisture into his diet hopefully preventing any further occurrences of constipation. Dehydration is the number one cause of constipation in cats. Do not feed him any treats, and try to play with him at least once a day to get him moving. At his age, he certainly won't be running around like a kitten, but movement will be good for him. I hope this helps!
