Why is my overweight senior cat hissing when I touch his back?

Updated on September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Cat | American Wirehair | Male | neutered | 8 years and 5 months old | 20 lbs

My cat is 8 years old and overweight. When we would pet his lower back, he used to purr and do this weird twitchy thing and lick himself. Now he meows and hisses if we even touch his back. I’m scared to take him to the vet because I’ve always had to have my cats put down when I took them, and Chip is the best. I don’t want to lose him, but I don’t want him to be in pain. What might be wrong?

It is quite possible he has arthritis in the hips causing discomfort, which is aggravated by being overweight. Prescription pain relief would be recommended to relieve any discomfort and blood tests may be recommended to ensure he has no underlying health issues prior to starting these
