Senior cat sneezing after basement move. Is it allergies or something else?

Taken individually, the symptoms wouldn't be too concerning, but with several things going on at the same time, I recommend getting him seen by your vet for an exam. Since he's been feeling a bit off since the move, it's even more important to get him checked to see what's going on. Also, as an older cat, he could be starting to have some kidney concerns which, if identified early can be managed at home with instruction by your vet. You vet will do an exam, bloodwork, possibly x-rays as well if indicated. Based on these resuts you vet will be better able to tell you what is going on and how best to treat it.

It could be just mild nasal irritation. It coukd also be due to environmental factors like dust. Rarely we can see certain slow rising disease of cats such as nasal tumors. However we usually see discharge like mucus or blood. If you ever see a discharge, your cats attitude changes or the sneezing increases in its frequency I would consider having your veterinarian do an exam.

Hello, thank you for your question about Barney. I suspect that the increased sneezing you are noticing is secondary to the renovations and all the particles that are being kicked up into the air. Additionally, cats are extremely sensitive to stress and can develop a mild upper respiratory infection secondary to this. I would recommend continuing to monitor Barney at home. If the sneezing increases in frequency or he develops any other symptoms such as cloudy ocular/nasal discharge or coughing I would recommend having him evaluated by your veterinarian. Jude and Bunny are an adorable pair!! Sneezing in cats is most commonly caused by upper respiratory viruses, especially when multiple cars in a household are showing signs. Many of these viruses are self limiting so just keeping an eye on them (as you are ) and making sure they are continuing to eat and drink normally and their energy continues to be normal may be all you need to do. If they start having thick yellow or green nasal discharge , discharge from eyes , lethargy, or a change in appetite I would have them evaluated by their veterinarian. If they start becoming slightly congested you can humidity the air using a cool air humidifier or place them in the bathroom while the warm water runs and steams up the air.
