My cat sneezes at home but not on vacation. Is it allergies?

Pet's info: Cat | Mixed Breed | Female | spayed | 13 lbs

Recently my cat of 10 years old has been sneezing for a few months. I took her to the vet got her on pills for around 3 months and it came back. Although, what’s strange to me is that I took her on vacation with me to see family in the midwest about a few days ago and she didn’t sneeze at all. But, now that we are both back in the east coast she is starting to sneeze again. What could this possibly be?

The weather change could definitely be the cause of an increase in allergies. Unfortunately allergies cannot be cured and it is more of a maintenance throughout the year. Make sure she is kept on a good flea prevention. And when she starts to get really itchy then she may need some more allergy medicine from the vet. Finally, you can try to give her 1/3 teaspoon of children's Benadryl twice a day to see if that helps.

It is nearly impossible to figure out what environmental allergies are present. I have had animals tested positive to dust mites, cockroaches, dog dander, plus all the pollens possible outside! I would encourage you to visit with your veterinarian about possible therapies to improve her. In the meantime wiping her down with a wet cloth several times a day can wipe away many allergens. Also installing an air purifier in the room she spends the most time in can also be helpful. Best of luck and thank you for using Pet Coach.

It sounds like she may be experiencing a type of contact allergic reaction. If you are able to bathe her I would do so in some Dawn dish soap to remove any residue that may be on her causing her irritation. Then tomorrow, I would take her to your vet for an exam and to get her some proper treatment.

Unfortunately it’s impossible to say if Carol is sneezing due to allergies, a viral infection or something is stuck in her nostril. You can start her on a cat supplement called Lysine. Carol should take 500mg twice daily. This can help if it is viral. Keep a very close eye on her. Constant sneezing can be the first sign of an upcoming full blown respiratory tract infection. Watch for any nasal or ocular discharge. Watch for lethargy, squinting eyes or not eating well. If you end up needing to go in, there are two companies who may be able to provide financing: Care Credit and Scratch. You can find more information and an application on their websites. Senior cat sneezing after basement move. Is it allergies or something else?

Fuzzybugs could be sneezing as a result of airborne irritants, allergies, asthma or the start of an upper respiratory infection. If possible, try removing Fuzzybugs from the basement to another room in the house to monitor if his sneezing continues or resolves. If it continues, he may need to take a trip to the vet, as he may need antibiotics if an infection is present or antihistamines if allergies are suspected. If the sneezing resolves, you can try putting him in the basement again with an air filtration device to try to remove extra airborne allergens. I hope that all goes well!

It could be just mild nasal irritation. It coukd also be due to environmental factors like dust. Rarely we can see certain slow rising disease of cats such as nasal tumors. However we usually see discharge like mucus or blood. If you ever see a discharge, your cats attitude changes or the sneezing increases in its frequency I would consider having your veterinarian do an exam.

I am glad that she is acting normal otherwise. If her sneezing persists though, she will need to see her veterinarian. She may require an antibiotic.
