Why is my senior cat skinny, drooling, slow, and losing his voice?

In an older cat, my first thought would be dental disease. This would be painful for Krinkle, cause him to eat less, and subsequent weight loss. It could also be that he has diabetes, kidney failure, or hyperthyroidism. Having him seen by a vet this week is a good idea. I hope this helps!

Wet food actually helps cats lose weight. It has a higher moisture content, so it takes more of it to give a cat their daily caloric requirements I would have him seen by a vet today or tomorrow. In a senior cat, this weight loss can not only be caused by dental problems, but also diabetes, kidney disease, hyperthyroidism, or cancer. I recommend having a physical exam, geriatric blood panel, and urinalysis to diagnose what is causing his weight loss. Once the cause is found, the vet can discuss treatment options.

It sounds like Archie may be sick. It sounds like he is lethargic and having a decrease in appetite, both of which are signs of illness. He could have a dental problem, systemic illness, infection, inflammation, or injury causing these symptoms. The drooling could be due to dental problems, pain, or nausea. Even with no teeth the drooling is abnormal. I would be concerned that he has an infection or stomatitis of the mouth or possibly kidney disease causing him to be uremic- a build up of toxins in the blood that can cause ulcers and other problems. I would recommend getting him to a vet for evaluation and possible medications to help keep his twilight years comfortable.

I would be concerned she may have kidney disease - reduced appetite, tooth loosening and vision loss due to high blood pressure and retinal detachment are common side effects. I recommend a vet check as soon as possible, taking a urine sample using special collection litter would be helpful for full assessment

Hi there and thank you for using pet coach to address your concern. If maximus has not had a full blood panel run in a while, I would first get this checked. Also, if his glucose or fructosamine levels are not controlled, this can lead to abnormal walking or neuropathies. Weight loss is to be expected with diabetes to a certain degree but he may have other systemic problems going on at the same time. I would also check his urine for a UTI as diabetics tend to be prone to these. Your vet can perform these additional diagnostics to determine what the problem is, if there are any besides the diabetes. I hope this helps! Morris needs to be examined by the veterinarian. It sounds like he has multiple issues and these can only be addressed by the veterinarian. He needs bloodwork to look for kidney disease, hyperthyroidism or cancer. It's possible he has a heart condition and dental disease as well. The drooling likely indicates tooth problems and this can indicate pain. Have him examined soon. Just like humans, if these conditions are diagnosed and treated earlier, they have a better prognosis.
