My senior cat has a lump under her skin that popped. What now?

The mass may need to be removed or treated with antibiotics. Your veterinarian may also take a sample of the mass to determine what it is and if it needs to be removed. If the mass burst due to your manipulation, then it could be a cyst. If this is the case, it would be a benign mass that should not be problematic for her. There is no way of knowing for sure without an examination though this represents a reason to seek veterinary care. This is usually determined with an examination and a fine needle aspirate (FNA) or a biopsy. Treatment depends on the findings up to that point. It is likely to be a small mass in the skin, it could be infection, a cyst or fatty lump. There is always a chance that it could be a type of cancer so I would keep a close eye on it. If it gets bigger or changes shape I would have the vet to test it to determine the exact type of mass.

This large lump needs to be checked and analysed as there are many conditions and types of tumors that could look like that. take Chauncy to the vet, they will perform a fine needle aspiration on the lump and send it to the lab for analysis (unless your vet sees some pus right away, in this case it's an abscess and can be treated on spot). when the result comes, the vet will advise what needs to be done according to the diagnosis.

This could be a small area of bacterial infection or a cyst if it has fluid in it other than pus. This could be associated with one of the many glands in the skin causing a sebaceous cyst. Other causes are a bite from a parasite (flea, tick, mite) or insect (spider/ant) among others. I would warm compress the area if Chubbs will let you to see if you can get it to come to a head and drain. You can also put Neosporin right on the area, it won't harm either if ingested. Continue to monitor the area. If it worsens, spreads, persists, have your vet check it out. They can get a first hand look and advise on how to proceed. I have a feeling just by the picture that this may resolve on it's own with some simple treatment as described. Good luck with Chubbs.

This is an abscess and the white substance is puss. These are often caused by something under the skin that gets infected. It could be a thorn or from a bite. It's best if a vet examines this and explores the wound, because if the cause of the infection is not removed, then the infection will never clear. Sometimes these infections have potential to cause infections elsewhere, or can get worse, so a vet may need to prescribe medication to prevent this. For now, keep the area clean by flushing with water twice a day. I hope that helps and Mittens gets better soon.
