Why did my senior cat have seizures, breathing issues, and a mass?

Hello. I am so sorry for the loss of your beloved pet. He, unfortunately, suffered a severe cardio-pulmonary event, either from the presence of heartworms, cancer, or severe cardiomyopathy. He was probably sicker than you realized, & also sicker longer than just the past 6 weeks. We all try to do the best we can for ourselves & our pets & sometimes we just run out of time to do anything. I know you feel bad, but you have to be honest with yourself & know that even if you had the money, he may have been too sick to do much for him. If Mecia is having trouble breathing, she should be seen by a vet immediately as she may require stabilization such as fluids or supplemental oxygen to make her more comfortable. A vet may recommend euthanasia, but no vet will euthanize Mecia without your consent.

Thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! Seizures can occur due to many reasons that go from a toxicity, metabolic diseases, inflammatory diseases and even tumors. I highly recommend that you have him evaluated by a veterinarian as soon as possible for further assessment and treatment. Diagnostics that will be recommended will include bloodwork and advanced imaging such as an MRI. They would also be able to start him on anti-seizure medications to try to avoid the onset of more seizures. Good luck and have a good day! Hoping for a speedy recovery!

Hi, thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! I am so sorry! Poor Munchie! Flusapex is lasix, which is a diuretic used for heart failure. If she was given 0.30 mls that is an appropriate dose. My assumption is that the Vet though Munchie was in heart failure. Trouble breathing is serious and the only thing I could think of that could have been done differently is that Munchie should have been admitted and hospitalized for oxygen therapy and monitoring. But if her heart failure was severe the outcome may still have been the same. Again I am very sorry for your loss, Munchie sounded like she was very sick! I hope this helps in some way.

It is hard to say exactly what is causing Sash's symptoms without examine her, but I can offer some possibilities. Coughing can be a sign of an upper respiratory infection, lung disease, lung cancer, heart disease, or feline asthma. The only was to definitively know what is causing Sasha to cough is for a veterinarian to do an exam and perform an x-ray of Sash'a chest so her heart and lungs can be visualized and evaluated. Possible causes are congestive heart failure, pleural effusion (from heart failure, infection, cancer, chyle, blood) or cancer. Has your Vet determined the cause. Cats in heart failure can do well once stable but will need to be on life long medications. Only you know what is best for Spas and your family. If he doesn't start improving where he doesn't need oxygen and is breathing normally with in 2-3 days then it is reasonable to think about stopping. If he responds and is back to normal I would treat him until he has another crisis and then consider stopping. I hope this helps and I wish you and Spas the best!

Unfortunately whenever there is a worry about trouble breathing it is advised to go to an open emergency hospital if your local vet is no open. Trouble breathing is life threatening. Possible causes are: heart failure, asthma, fever, infection, pleural effusion (fluid around the lungs) from cancer, chyle, or heart failure. Snake needs an exam and X-rays. I wish you both the best!
