My 11-year-old cat is coughing and losing weight. What's wrong?

Possible causes of coughing include pneumonia, asthma, bronchitis, among other possibilities. Your veterinarian could also prescribe pain control medications as well as checking for possible reasons for weight loss such as hyperthyroidism, renal disease, cancer, among other possibilities. Hi there and thank you for using pet coach to address your concern. If you got him as a feral cat, you most likely do not have a full history on him. Since you don't have a full history, I would get him tested for FeLV and FIV. These infectious diseases are not curable and can cause cats to become prone to secondary infections such as respiratory infections. I would get him seen by your vet to have additional tests performed to figure out the source of the cough. Some cats are prone to herpes viral respiratory infections and these typically resolve on their own. He may need a course of an antibiotic to get over this. I hope this helps! It is hard to say exactly what the cause of the sneezing and coughing, decreased eating/drinking may be without examining her first. However, it could be an upper respiratory infection (which can be contagious to other cats), due to dental disease or another oral health issue, feline asthma, or certain heart conditions. I would recommend Pickels's see her veterinarian soon for an exam to determine a diagnosis so she can get the proper treated. Her veterinarian may want to take chest x-rays to get a better view of the heart and lungs or suggest other diagnostics as needed. I hope this helps!

I'm sorry Sacha isn't feeling well. There are several possibilities for respiratory disease in cats. Cats can develop asthma, get heartworms or have allergic bronchitis. Any of these conditions require a trip to the vet for diagnosis. Especially if you feel she is having trouble breathing please take her soon before this turns into an emergency. Your vet may recommend X-rays or bloodwork after doing an exam on Sacha

This sounds like your cat has an abscess, foreign body, naso-or oro-pharyngeal polyps, or ulcer or other type of purulent infection in her throat. She will need to be seen by a veterinarian who will need to thoroughly inspect her throat and upper airway, possibly under sedation and then remove the offending problem or lance an abscess.
