My senior cat screamed after pooping, now seems constipated. Help!

Thank you for contacting Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach with your question about Jasmine. Poor girl! It could be she has a GI illness causing the vomiting and diarrhea. Likely she has had some loose stools, and it's normal to see a cat act like they are trying to poop but have nothing come out. It's not constipation, it's just she still has the urge to go but nothing comes out. It happens in humans as well who have diarrhea. Unfortunately I cannot recommend giving Pepcid or Miralax without seeing her in person, it's illegal. I can give you a home remedy to see if that helps. Feed her a bland diet of boiled white meat chicken (no bones) in small amounts several times a day for a couple of days. Then slowly add back in his normal diet. If she vomits the bland diet, the diarrhea continues on the bland diet, stops drinking water, starts vomiting water, or becomes very lethargic, she will need to see a vet right away. Best of luck.

Thank you for submitting your question regarding Pati. She may be battling some mild constipation if she is having small amounts of stool. You can try to increase her water consumption. Some cats prefer running water such as from a faucet for a cat fountain. You can also add warm water to her dry food or offer more canned food. This can help make it easier for a cat to defecate. Hi, thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! Poor Tibbs! He is super cute! I agree with the ER Vet. Constipation is a symptom of something else not a primary disease. The most common cause of constipation is kidney disease or underlying intestinal disease like IBD or cancer. I recommend full blood work including urine and a T4. Tibbs should have an enema if he is severely constipated and should be on stool softeners to help him keep his stool soft long term. I would follow up with your normal Vet tomorrow. Is the stool hard? Is Kamu constipated? I would recommend bringing Kamu to the veterinarian and bring a stool sample with you. Your cat could be severely constipated and the straining can make him nauseous. For severe constipation, your pet should be seen by a vet. Hard stool building up in the colon stretches it out of shape, and it also causes stretching of the muscles around the anus, causing perianal hernias that trap the collected feces, effectively making a plug. Your pet may need more than one enema and even manual extraction of the feces in order to relieve this episode. To help avoid this in the future, you can add Miralax to the food. Miralax is a very gentle, easy to give treatment for constipation, available over the counter at any pharmacy. The dose of Miralax is 1 tsp per 50 lbs mixed in with food once a day. You can also add a tablespoon of vegetable or olive oil to his food once daily, or add a couple of teaspoons of canned pumpkin (not pie filling) to his food daily.

Sounds like Mau Mau is very constipated! The liquid you see may be coming around the hard stool in his colon. The belching could be a sign that gas isn't moving down so it comes up instead. Being in the curled up position more than normal may mean his belly hurts. You can try gently rubbing his tummy for comfort and to stimulate his bowel to move the firm stool. But if it continues much longer, you should have him re-examined by your vet for additional treatments or sedation to remove the firm stool. He may also need to go on a special food to prevent further constipation. This is a common issue in cats.

I'm sorry to hear that Gizmo is having some trouble! Before worrying about his pooping, first make sure that he is urinating normally. Male cats can develop urethral obstructions (blockages) that can prevent them from peeing. This is a life-threatening emergency that needs immediate treatment. Many cats with these blockages strain in the litter box and it can make it look like they're having trouble pooping. If Gizmo is urinating normally, it's possible that he's constipated. Be sure that he is drinking plenty of water. Adding water to canned food is a great way to get him to drink more. Also adding some canned pumpkin to his diet can increase his fiber intake, which can help him to poop. If he's gone 3 or more days without a bowel movement, Gizmo needs to go to the vet for further evaluation, as medications or an enema may be needed. I hope this helps and that all goes well!
