Why is my senior cat meowing before and after using the litter box?

Poor girl! Her symptoms suggest a possible Feline lower urinary tract disease (FLUTD) or bladder stones. Other possibilities are kidney disease and diabetes. You can easily distinguish which one is present by having Angel's urine sample analyzed (urinalysis) through your veterinarian. It sounds as though Lil Man may be struggling to defecate and this may be causing him discomfort. I would recommend adding in Feline Laxatone and see if this helps normalize his bowel movements. With his age, if he hasn't had a veterinarian examine him in a while or have his blood tested, I would strongly recommend that you have this done in case there is something else going on systemically that is causing these symptoms. Hello, thank you for your question about Atticus. The symptoms that you are describing could be indicative of two possibilities - constipation or urinary obstruction. Urinary obstruction is much more common in male cats due to their anatomy; however, if Atticus had an underlying condition such as bladder stones, she could experience an obstruction. Constipation is a not uncommon condition in cats. It can have many different underlying causes. Since Atticus is otherwise acting normally I would recommend continuing to monitor her for the next 12-24 hours. If she continues to go in/out of the box and does not produce any urine/feces or she develops any other symptoms (lethargy, vomiting, inappetance) I would recommend having her seen by your veterinarian. This condition, if allowed to progress, can even be life threatening. I recommend having Cornelius seen by a vet as soon as possible - he should be seen right away if he has blood in his urine, begins urinating in abnormal areas, or you note that he is straining to urinate (leaves only small amounts of urine after spending longer in the litter box). With that kind of vocalization and restless behavior, I suspect he may have a urinary tract infection. I recommend getting him to see your vet as soon as possible, Male cats are especially prone to becoming blocked and unable to urinate. If it isn't urinary, he still may have some underlying medical condition that is making him uncomfortable and restless. Your vet will do an exam and labwork to determine what is causing this behavioral change and how best to treat it.
