Can my senior cat with kidney disease have treats on Hill's k/d?

As long as she does not have a lot of weight gain and becomes overweight from feedng this much, she should be ok to eat a little bit more. Start with 2 pouches and see how she does with that. Smokey is adorable! I love black cats. Any treat that is given occasionally is okay. The main thing is to to ensure that Smokey gets lots of clean fresh water all the time and make sure he's drinking. Feeding canned food is a way to ensure he's getting more water but I know some cats prefer dry to canned and can't be convinced otherwise.

Yes, it is ok to eat renal food, but only as a treat or supplement to the main diet of Hills Rx Senior. Renal food is lower in protein than normal cat food since the kidneys can't handle excess protein when they are failing. So it would be best for long-term health if Tony gets plenty of protein, which is in the senior diet!

Talk to your vet about trying different brands that have prescription kidney diet. But if it is him not eat anything or eat a normal, good quality dog food, it is more important that he eat something. As for treats, focus on low sodium, low protein treats. Dog biscuits are ok, and veggies and fruits that are safe for dogs. Stay away from meaty dog treats or jerky.

Yes, if you give her normal food it will shorten her life span but I agree with you, her quality of life is more important and she needs to eat! When it comes to kidney disease a food that is as low in phosphorus as possible is recommended. Unfortunately, no over the counter foods are low enough in phosphorus to be beneficial. Hence, the prescription diets. Now, there are many different companies that make prescription diets - I would suggest you try another brand before just giving in to her.
