Can my dog with kidney disease eat egg or tuna as an occasional treat?

Talk to your vet about trying different brands that have prescription kidney diet. But if it is him not eat anything or eat a normal, good quality dog food, it is more important that he eat something. As for treats, focus on low sodium, low protein treats. Dog biscuits are ok, and veggies and fruits that are safe for dogs. Stay away from meaty dog treats or jerky.

If it is temporary (a week or less), its ok for your dog to eat primarily chicken breast or tuna. Try to feed her a little bit of rice mixed with it as well. If she needs to be on medication long term, it would be better to try to formulate a well balanced long term diet that she will eat. The challenge with chronic kidney disease is that it's often necessary to limit protein intake, but they can be a bit nauseous if their kidney values (BUN and creatinine) are high. Some cats also require supplements of potassium to help keep their electrolytes under control. I don't know specifically what you have available in Brazil with respect to prescription diets, but I usually prescribe either Hill's Science Diet k/d, Purina NF, or Royal Canin renal support. I would start by asking your vet if you could try one of those diets for Sophia - possibly mixed with the A/D to help make it more palatable to her. Ultimately, when it comes to managing cats with kidney disease, it's more important to get them to eat something - anything - over nothing. If you try all of the renal diets and Sophia rejects them all, I would next try any other canned commercial cat food. If she also rejects those, you'll just have to give in and go with the higher protein fish option, such as cooked fresh tuna or salmon. It's not ideal, but what in life is? Renal diets are very effective for cats with kidney disease -by reducing the amount of toxins the kidneys are required to excrete many of the symptoms can be reduced; they are also naturally antiinflammatory and enriched with vitamins etc and are proven both to extend life expectancy and quality of life. The larger proportion of the diet that is made of of kidney food, the more effective it is however calorie intake is very important and tempting or supplementing the diet with easy to digest protein sources such as egg, boiled chicken or fish is ok (for some clinical diets this is not appropriate but for kidney patients it is better than not eating the special diet)

Hello. You do want to keep to this diet for the majority of his calories. Acceptable treats should make up less than 10% of his overall calories per day & include low fat yogurt ( 2-3 tbsp. 2-3 x weekly ), 1/4 of an apple, white rice, rye bread, 2-3 non-salted saltine crackers, 2-3 baby carrots per day, & small amounts of cooked beef, chicken & eggs. Avoid lots of meats & any high protein treats & no vitamin or mineral supplements. The daily Dasaquin is fine to use. Try to keep to the prescribed diet as much as possible. Eggs are fine as an occasional treat, but it's not something that Andy should get daily. The only food that a dog needs is a high quality dog food, which will provide him all the nutrients he needs to be healthy. Adding additional food on top of that will lead to extra calories and weight gain. Weight gain leads to obesity, which in turn leads to its own health problems such as heart disease, diabetes, and joint problems. It would be fine to give him a boiled egg (no shell) once or twice a week as a treat. You can also give him a scrambled egg, but make sure it's egg only and no seasonings etc. Good luck, I hope this helps!
