My cat's Royal Canin Renal is out. Can I use Hill's k/d instead?

The diets do have different mechanisms of action. However, as long as the Hills diet makes up 90% of Milo's total calorie intake or more, it should work just fine. It sounds like Milo only gets the canned food every other day so I suspect it is just fine. When in doubt, decrease the amount of canned food. You could count up how many calories he gets in the dry and how many he gets in the canned. Then do the math and get an exact ratio as well. Then you will have no doubts! Yes, it is ok to eat renal food, but only as a treat or supplement to the main diet of Hills Rx Senior. Renal food is lower in protein than normal cat food since the kidneys can't handle excess protein when they are failing. So it would be best for long-term health if Tony gets plenty of protein, which is in the senior diet!

I can't speak for all renal diets out there, but the Hill's Prescription diet K/D and the Royal Canin Renal Support Prescription diet does contain a urinary acidifier in it to help prevent struvite stone formation. You can likely feed her any formulation of wet food if it is just for one day. It is unlikely to cause harm unless your kitty has a sensitive stomach. Maybe consider a senior diet or sensitive stomach diet for the time being. You can also ask for an emailed prescription from your vet and many stores will carry the prescription foods.

Hello. Unfortunately, the over the counter urinary diets just do not match up to the prescription ones. You may need to try Mischief on another brand, like Royal Canin to see if he will accept this one. There are also different versions of the C/D that he might accept better, but if & when you go to switch, just be sure to take your time. This will help Mischief to accept the foods, better. One trick I like to use is to take a glass jar & add enough dry kibble so there is 75% old & 25% new food. Put the lid on & let this sit for a day or two to let the smells & flavors blend.
