My senior cat's incision isn't healing & has a new lump. What to do?

It certainly looks like this surgery site is infected. This could be due to parasites or it could be a bacterial or fungal infection. I recommend you ask your vet to have the mass cultured to determine exactly what is causing the infection. That way he/she can ensure that the correct medication is being used to resolve the infection.

In this case it is very likely that the tumor is aggressive and it is coming back. To be able to give you a specific answer in this case, I would need to have more informations about the tumor (name of it if it was analyzed after removal) and other clinical investigations that have been done (if any).

Mammary growths in cats have a high chance of being a malignant cancer. Since they are open and draining, they may also be infected It would be best to have a vet check the area to see if surgery is an option to remove them or at least medication to help clean them and clear the infection. Peroxide can actually delay healing after the first use. You are safer with mild soap and water to wipe it clean

Given Simba's age, I would be very concerned that this lump may be a malignant tumor. Because antibiotics and steroids haven't help, I would recommend having blood tests, a urinalysis, x-rays, and a fine needle aspirate (FNA) done on the lump. To do an FNA, the vet sticks a small needle into the lump to get a sample of it's cells, and examines the cells on a slide under a microscope. It's usually painless to the animal, and relatively quick to perform. These tests may hopefully help diagnose the cause of the lump. Once the cause is found, the vet can discuss treatment options.

Yes it is definitely possible for an abscess to form if there was any bacteria that was introduced underneath the skin in this area. It is good that it is draining, but now Luna needs a short course of antibiotics prescribed by your vet to get this to heal well. Also having it flushed with an antiseptic (usually we use Chlorhexidine solution diluted) will help this help well. Poor guy. This appears to be a mass that has ulcerated and is now bleeding. When masses rupture like this they are a constant source of infection and discomfort for the pet. I recommend scheduling an appt with your vet to discuss having this mass removed surgically at this point. In the meantime you can try cleaning it with Betadine diluted 50:50 with warm water to antiseptically clean the area and prevent infection. You can also place an e-collar on Harley to deter him from chewing or licking at it , which will only make it more irritated. Best of luck with Harley and getting this mass removed. Take care.
