My cat has a new bump after surgery. Could it be an abscess?

Is it possible for an abscess to form after a surgery to remove a mass from a cat? My 8 year old cat had a medium sized bump removed and the vet said he was able to take it all out. However, soon after the surgery, a new bump began to form in the same spot. Months later, it burst and a clear fluid came out, followed by small bits of a yellowish thicker substance(see picture).

Yes it is definitely possible for an abscess to form if there was any bacteria that was introduced underneath the skin in this area. It is good that it is draining, but now Luna needs a short course of antibiotics prescribed by your vet to get this to heal well. Also having it flushed with an antiseptic (usually we use Chlorhexidine solution diluted) will help this help well. I am sorry that Luna has this complication following surgery, but hopefully you can get this to resolve soon. Best wishes and take care.

Thank you for providing a picture of Luna's bump. Yes, malignant tumors can rupture, but so can cysts or abscesses. The only way to know for sure is to have tests done on it, such as fine needle aspirate. I would take Luna into another vet for a second opinion to get a definitive diagnosis as to what is causing the bump. Abscesses are treated with antibiotics, so they don't need to be removed surgically. If it is a tumor, it can be removed but it would be up to the vet treating her to decide if it's safe to do. I would have Luna seen by another vet for a second opinion on Monday. I hope this helps!

It's probably an abscess from a fight, you will need to take her to the vet ASAP in order to get it checked, if it is an abscess indeed the vet will need to sedate her, shave the area and lance the abscess to remove all the pus that gathered inside. she will also need an antibiotic injection.

Hi. Yes, this could be an access. I can't say that for sure, but if the bacteria are resistant to the medications prescribed, an abscess can still form. I recommend getting her rechecked so you can find out what that lump is.

My cat had abscess surgery. Why isn't her drainage tube draining?

The tube is a drainage and seems well placed. If there is no fluid coming out from the wound the tube can be removed in the next 48hours. The wound seems, externally, healing quite well so if Luna is ok in herself (eating well, no lethargy, no vomiting or diarrhoea and no excessive discomfort), everything seems going well postoperatively. The outcome will be good, and I do not think you need to seek advice from another vet. I would discuss Penrose drainage removal with your vet and continue with medications prescribed (antibiotics are needed). Differentials include skin cysts, infections, benign or more sinister type of tumors. My cat has a recurring deep yellow lump. Could it be an abscess?

These each sound like an abscess that healed but trapped the bacteria under neath so it opened up and drained. The yellow inside may be fat or necrotic tissue. Clean it with soap and water on a cloth until you can take her to the vet. typically they heal very well and quickly but will need antibiotics to make sure the infection is gone while it is healing

My kitten has a squishy bump near stitches after spay. Should I worry?

This sounds like it is likely a seroma (a fluid pocket under the skin), or a tissue reaction to the suture material - both of these are quite common in cats after spay surgery, and should not cause any serious problems. Less commonly, the swelling could be caused by an infection or even a hernia. If Leia is acting normal (eating and drinking fine, playful, etc.), you can monitor the bump until it's time for her stitches to be removed. Applying a warm compress like a warm wet washcloth to the area 2-3 times a day can help the swelling to resolve faster, as well as restricting her activity as much as possible. If Leia is acting very lethargic or not eating, or if there is any bleeding or yellow-green discharge from the bump, these may be signs of infection - in that case, I would take her to the vet today for an exam and antibiotics or other medication if needed.

It sounds like this wound that became a lump that is oozing fluid has become an abscess, or a pocket of infected fluid. Abscesses form when infection is trapped under the skin or within tissues such as fat or muscle. The bacteria will try to find a way out, so they can break through the skin and create a "draining tract" of pus. This should be addressed by your veterinarian, who will likely drain the abscess and open it up to allow continuous drainage. Antibiotics for at least 2 weeks will be needed, along with pain medications. Depending on the size of the wound/abscess, a bandage may be needed. I hope this is helpful! It certainly looks like this surgery site is infected. This could be due to parasites or it could be a bacterial or fungal infection. I recommend you ask your vet to have the mass cultured to determine exactly what is causing the infection. That way he/she can ensure that the correct medication is being used to resolve the infection.
