My senior cat has a recurring lump after surgery. What should I do?

Pet's info: Cat | Mixed Breed | Female | spayed | 13 years and 10 months old | 7 lbs

Hi. I have a 13 years old cat. Earlier last year she started growing a lump in the middle of her body on the right side. It grew quickly. The vet said they could not determine if it was cancerous or not. She ended up having surgery. Unfortunately, she grew a lump again, quickly. This time the lump is a bit harder than the last time. The vet said her body needs to "clean out" but how is it cleaning out by growing another lump? Does she need another surgery? What do you think is going on? Help.

In this case it is very likely that the tumor is aggressive and it is coming back.
To be able to give you a specific answer in this case, I would need to have more informations about the tumor (name of it if it was analyzed after removal) and other clinical investigations that have been done (if any).

Poor Zoe and poor you! It sounds like you both have been through a lot lately. You are right that the incision area looks really red and swollen, and another type of antibiotic may be needed to treat the infection. Taking a culture of the area will help the vet identify what bacteria are present and subsequently which antibiotic would be best to treat the infection. As for the new lump, yes having it surgically removed would be best, as 90% of mammary tumors in cats are malignant. You can speak with your vet about removal of that lump.

I'm very sorry to hear that, it's because the tumor was probably not removed entirely or because it is a malignant tumor that has already spread to other places. you will need to take him back to the vet to get it checked and assessed, your vet might tell you that it should not be operated again if he thinks it will keeps growing back.

My cat has recurring lumps after vet visit. Are they cancerous?

The picture only shows an open wound. I don’t see any tumors to speak of. So unfortunately we can’t tell if the additional masses look suspicous for cancer or not. However this open wound looks gnarly and the tissue doesn’t look happy. And the only way to confirm or deny cancer is to have the masses tested and sent to the lab. However some masses are more suspicous for cancer than others. Without knowing the nature of the lump it is impossible to advise - some masses are abscesses and respond to antibiotics but with many tumors surgery or chemotherapy would be recommended. A full check up and possibly a needle biopsy would be recommended

My senior cat's mouth is drooping. Are these lumps serious and need removal?

This might need to be removed surgically, the best way to find out is to take her to the vet, they will aspirate a small sample with a syringe and needle from the lump, then they will send it to the lab to find out if the tumor is cancerous or benign. if it is cancerous it will need to be removed for sure, but even if it is benign, due to the symptom it causes, your vet might advise surgical removal.
