Can I give my cat something to calm her for matted fur removal?

  I don't recommend to give Bella melatonin and it is unlikely to work regardless. There is not a good over the counter supplement or herb that sedates or calms pets. Not enough that they would allow a grooming if they don't want it to happen.
  
  You may call your veterinarian and ask about a medication called Gabapentin which does seem to work well for most cats. It will not make her asleep (no medication will) but most cats will become more tolerant.
  
  if Bella will still not allow it, I recommend to call your vet and ask about a sedated grooming. This can be done alone or as part of a dental cleaning (for most pets). It is important to keep the matts off Bella because they can cause pain and infection.

  Unfortunately, there are no safe OTC sedatives for cats. The type of sedation needed in order to do this can only be given to Todd by a vet, and should only be done with strict vet supervision. There are vets who are mobile vets, meaning they will come to your home to perform services. I would see if there is a mobile vet in your area who can come to your house to give him sedation and monitor him while he is getting his matted fur removed.
