Salmon oil belongs in the category of Omega 3 fatty acids, & while the direct pharmacological action is unknown, omega-3s do have anti-inflammatory properties & have proven useful in a number of conditions, including renal failure. As far as I know it does not make a lot of difference, so you can use it on top of food. Essential Fatty Acids are always a good idea in my opinion since they are part of every living cell of the body and they are anti inflammatory. I don't know of any diseases where fish oil is not recommended. One thing you want to be careful of is the quality of the oil and whether contaminants (mercury, etc) are present. Supplements are not regulated (in the United States) so the quality varies significantly. I would choose my source of fish oil carefully and follow the directions based on body weight. Hello. Yes, it is absolutely OK to give Skye an appropriate dose of salmon oil, but make sure she likes the taste. Not all cats like any kind of fish product. I do not recommend it. I see it's a product sold on Amazon, and typically these types of "natural" supplements do nothing and are a waste of money. I would speak to Tony's vet about putting him on a prescription kidney diet. Studies have shown cats live on average two years longer on a kidney diet who have kidney disease than cats not on a kidney diet who have kidney disease.
