My senior cat has kidney disease. What food and Omegas are best?

Pet's info: Cat | Persian | Female | spayed | 11 years and 10 months old | 4 lbs

Would this dry food low on phosphorus and sodium be good for an 11 year old cat with early kidney disease? Should I be concern about the Omega 3 & 6? What's the recommended dose for Omegas for a cat with kidney disease? Thank you

In general, foods low in sodium and phosphorus are good choices for patients with kidney disease. The best fatty acid supplement you can provide in my opinion to your kitty is this:

For cats with kidney disease, it is very important to feed a low protein diet that is formulated into a wet food. Hills K/D and Royal Canin Renal Support are both very good options available through your veterinarian. Omega 3 and 6 supplements are a great thing to add to the diet. These should also be available through your vet.

Typically for kidney disease that is advanced, we recommend a protein-restricted diet, such as Hill's k/d or Royal Canin's LP. Omega 3 fats often help to decrease the inflammation that is often a cause of muscle wasting in cats, so yes, I think supplementation with fish oil is a great idea.

Great question! Prescription diet: Hills K/D, Purina NF, or Royal Canin renal diets- they make 3 canned versions and 3 dry versions for different cat preferences. Non-prescription: Hills Mature diets, Iams mature diets, or Purina One mature diets. Honestly, the most important thing your cat can do is eat! If it is between eating a recommended diet or eating anything, I choose eating anything. I hope that helps. Kisses to Tony!

The challenge with chronic kidney disease is that it's often necessary to limit protein intake, but they can be a bit nauseous if their kidney values (BUN and creatinine) are high. Some cats also require supplements of potassium to help keep their electrolytes under control. I don't know specifically what you have available in Brazil with respect to prescription diets, but I usually prescribe either Hill's Science Diet k/d, Purina NF, or Royal Canin renal support. I would start by asking your vet if you could try one of those diets for Sophia - possibly mixed with the A/D to help make it more palatable to her. Ultimately, when it comes to managing cats with kidney disease, it's more important to get them to eat something - anything - over nothing. If you try all of the renal diets and Sophia rejects them all, I would next try any other canned commercial cat food. If she also rejects those, you'll just have to give in and go with the higher protein fish option, such as cooked fresh tuna or salmon. It's not ideal, but what in life is? I hope that everything goes well for Sophia!

The best supplement for kidney health is water. There are not any specific supplements other than that are known to prevent kidney problems. There are supplements that are important for them to get when they are in kidney failure, but are not necessary before then. What wet food is best for a cat with kidney disease and pancreatitis?

I would opt for a prescription kidney diet (Hill's K/D or Royal Canin renal) instead of any over the counter option if he has kidney disease especially, because the mainstay of treatment for this is the diet alone. This is also ok for his pancreatitis for now and hopefully he will get over this pancreatitis episode soon with the treatment recommendations through your vet. Pancreatitis in cats is often associated with a triaditis (3 disease) condition affecting both their intestines (IBD), pancrease (pancreatitis) and liver (cholangitis), so its imperative to follow your vets instructions on follow-up care as well. Is Kidney Shield omega-3 supplement good for my cat's kidney disease?

I do not recommend it. I see it's a product sold on Amazon, and typically these types of "natural" supplements do nothing and are a waste of money. I would speak to Tony's vet about putting him on a prescription kidney diet. Studies have shown cats live on average two years longer on a kidney diet who have kidney disease than cats not on a kidney diet who have kidney disease.
