How to safely pet and socialize a stray cat and her young kittens?

There's a stray cat, who gave birth to kittens around 2-3 weeks ago inside a cupboard in my balcony(1st floor). Can i pet her or her kittens?? I tried providing her with milk, and petted her with my hands once. Most of the times the cat is away and the kittens feel a little feared when i touch them...

You can try to pet her if she will let you. She doesn't need milk, she needs water. The kittens should start to be handled more to socialize them, and I would do it slowly and carefully. Interact with them a little bit every day, and increase the time and contact you have with them. If their eyes are open and they are moving around, you can give them toys to play with, and you can interact with them using the toys. When they are around four weeks of age, they can start getting a kitten mush to help them wean. To help them wean and to get used to dry food, I would soak a high quality kitten formulated dry food in warm water until soft. Then mix that with kitten formula such as KMR to make a mush the consistency of oatmeal. Over the next two weeks, gradually increase the amount of dry kitten food and decrease the amount of water and KMR you use until they are eating the dry kitten food only.

Oh they are so cute! From the picture, it looks like they may be old enough to be on a kitten food, and I will give you a method to get them onto it. If you don't want to keep them, I recommend taking them into the SPCA in the morning. The SPCA can get them the medical treatment they need and can find them a home.

Can I touch feral kittens to move them from a dangerous outdoor spot?

That is very kind of you to want to help this cat and her kittens! Yes, it is fine to touch them, but I would be careful around Momma. Some female cats can be very possessive of their kittens, and she may act aggressive if you try to move them. I would recommend giving the Humane Society a call, they will have the tools to trap her and her kittens safely.

Found friendly stray mother cat with kittens, what should I do next?

That is so lovely of you to want to help the mother and her kittens! I would definitely catch them as soon as possible, and bring them to a vet. The vet can do a health check on all of them, and can do blood tests and a urinalysis on the mother to check on her organ fuctions and to see if she has any diseases. Then the vet can schedule a spay for when the kittens are weaned, and vaccines as well. The vet can give you an idea of how old the kittens are, and can give you tips on how to help them wean. The first step is to catch them, however, and I would do that as soon as you can. So great of you to help them!

Is it safe for my 5-week-old kitten to play with newborn kittens?

How lovely of you to take in this stray cat and her kittens! I would keep your five week old male kitten separate from the kittens. At five weeks old, your kitten will not be vaccinated and can pass along diseases such as calicivirus and feline distemper to the kittens and their mother. Conversely, the mother could pass those along to your kitten as she likely isn't vaccinated. Fleas and intestinal worms can also be passed between them. I would take your kitten into your vet when he's six to eight weeks old to get his first vaccines, and be sure to take the mother and her kittens into the vet in the next couple of weeks to get check ups for them. You can discuss with the vet when to get the mother vaccinated and spayed so she won't have another litter of kittens, and when to start the kittens on their vaccines. Good luck, I hope this helps!

My spayed feral cat is nursing kittens. Is she producing milk?

It is possible that she has milk. Let mama tend to them but keep bottle feeding them. If they are not hungry because they got enough milk from mama, they will drink less or not at all. She is obviously a very good mama. Suckling is also an important comfort factor, even if there is no milk. It gives the kittens security and bonds. Leave them with their mama until they are 12 weeks old. She will teach them everything they need to know including how to use the litter box, what to eat and what not, hunting, etc., and you will get well adjusted kittens without behavioral problems. My new kittens: How to tell their age & how much to handle?

Spend time handling them each day. This will help to get them use to humans. Also look into resources to get the mother spayed. One female cat can have up to 27 kittens in a year...that's a lot of kittens! have the mother spayed when the kittens are 12 weeks old. Pregnant stray cat returned without kittens. When can I take her in?

She may have had the kittens and left them someplace secure while she searches for food. You can continue to feed her for the next 6 weeks or so. You may see the kittens before then. If so, you can choose to take them all in. Leaving her out puts her at risk of harm, but taking her in before her kittens are weaned puts them at risk. It is a difficult situation.
