My kitten was sick. Is it safe to let him outside before a week?

If Oliver is happy, playful, and eating, feel free to play with him if he starts it. If he wants to stop at any point, let him rest. Do keep him indoors as your vet recommended. I’m so glad Oliver is feeling better!

In general, it is recommended to keep a cat inside until they are finished with their medication and the wound is completely healed. However, an unneutered male cat will commonly get into additional fights once they go back outside, so Ollie will be at risk to have another bite wound, so your vet may have been encouraging you to keep him inside long term. Thank you for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! What clinical signs was she exhibiting that indicated she was ill: vomiting, coughing, sneezing, inappetance, etc? It is not uncommon for kittens to acquire respiratory infections if they were obtained from a shelter/rescue setting and this can certainly make them feel ill. If Luna appears back to her normal self and is eating/drinking normally, no vomiting/diarrhea, or other signs are noted then I would suspect she is okay at this point. If she is still exhibiting any abnormalities of any kind I would certainly have her evaluated by her veterinarian. Based on her physical examination with the doctor, a minimum database (complete blood count, serum chemistry, +/- urinalysis, +/- FeLV/FIV test), fecal diagnostics, or radiographs may be recommended.

If he seems healthy now then the chance of survival is good. Although, there is always a chance he gets exposed to an infectious disease and/or trauma if he is outside, again. Make sure he is up to date on all vaccines, especially if he is going to be put outside again.

Outdoor cats are more likely to get hit by cars, attached by other animals or fall ill from contagious diseases. I think the odds are fair that she would live to middle age. I hope this helps!

It could have been a severe viral infection (we don't have tests for many viruses), a toxin or secondary fatty liver from being sick and not eating. If he is 100% normal I would let him play with other cats 2 weeks AFTER he became normal. I hope this helps and I wish you all the best!

Hello and welcome to Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach. Viruses can be contagious, especially if the healthy cat is unvaccinated. It is always best to keep a new cat separate from your other cat for about 2 weeks (most viruses show up in 7-10 days) and if Sifu is sick I would definitely separate them until Sifu is feeling better. Monitor Sifu, and if he isn't eating/drinking or is having trouble breathing then have him back to the vet. Once he is feeling better then get him vaccinated and then introduce the two. A cage in the same room won't separate the viruses, ideally, they would be in separate rooms where the water from the sneezing won't be inhaled by your healthy cat. Best of luck with them!
