My cat had fever, vomiting, diarrhea. What was it? When can he play?

Parvo virus in cats (also known as panleukopenia) is a very serious illness with a poor prognosis. If Blue was not tested for feline panleukopenia and his diagnosis was an educated guess, it may be that the bloody stool and vomiting were caused by some other bacterial or viral infection, or intestinal parasites. I do hope that he continues to get better and go back to completely normal! A true panleukopenia virus infected cat can continue to shed virus particles for 6 weeks. I do recommend that he be seen by the vet to start vaccinations next week to prevent other viral infections that are prevented with proper vaccination. Some cats are lethargic and less playful when they have fever (I guess that was checked by your vet) or painful condition, for example muscle pain, joint pain, spinal pain and more. If his activity is not back to normal in 2-3 days I would suggest trying a short course of anti-inflammatory medications.

If Boxer is not improving and is not eating or drinking, I would recommend taking him back to the veterinarian for a recheck and having anti-nausea medications and fluids given to see if this helps further. If he continues to not eat, he may need a feeding tube if his liver becomes affected. I hope this helps! I would avoid giving Calpol as cats are very sensitive to this drug and can develop toxicity quite easily. There are safer fever reducers such as Meloxicam that you can have your veterinarian prescribe for you. I hope this helps! If Oliver is happy, playful, and eating, feel free to play with him if he starts it. If he wants to stop at any point, let him rest. Do keep him indoors as your vet recommended. I’m so glad Oliver is feeling better!

It is not uncommon for kittens to acquire respiratory infections if they were obtained from a shelter/rescue setting and this can certainly make them feel ill. If Luna appears back to her normal self and is eating/drinking normally, no vomiting/diarrhea, or other signs are noted then I would suspect she is okay at this point. If she is still exhibiting any abnormalities of any kind I would certainly have her evaluated by her veterinarian. Based on her physical examination with the doctor, a minimum database (complete blood count, serum chemistry, +/- urinalysis, +/- FeLV/FIV test), fecal diagnostics, or radiographs may be recommended.

I would recommend having her re-examined and do further diagnostics like X-rays and blood work to determine why. If she is still eating and drinking and energetic, you could wait until Tuesday. Loss of appetite, vomiting and diarrhea can be observed with many conditions such as gastroenteritis, dietary indiscretion, kidney disease, pancreatitis, among many other possibilities. I recommend that you have Miu reevaluated by your veterinarian for further assessment and treatment as she has not improved in the treatments they have recommended so far.
