My kitten reacted to spay stitches. Is it safe to leave internal ones?

I would leave the remaining suture alone unless it seems to be bothering Kloe. Depending on what type of suture your veterinarian uses, it may disintegrate and come out on its own over the next few weeks, or it may be a type of non-absorbable suture that is designed to stay in place permanently. If the area around the suture looks red or irritated, or if it seems to be bothering her, I would suggest taking her back to your vet to have this checked - he/she can safely remove it if needed.

Hello. I am so sorry that this has been so stressful. Most surgeries go off without a hitch, sometimes there are complications. This looks like a piece of suture, that may have been in the underlying muscle layer, may be trying to or has already migrated out. For now, just gently clean the area with a skin antiseptic like Hibiclens ( available at any pharmacy ) twice a day. Just dab it on & leave it. However, maybe it was suspected that she was having a reaction to the suture material or that they were contributing to the infection. It is possible for her wound to heal, but it will be more difficult without the sutures. She must be kept from licking the surgical site and her movements need to limited. No running, jumping or playing. I hope this information helps!

I recommend you just leave it alone. It is very common for cats to get a suture reaction to the stitches under the skin after being spayed. It should heal just fine on it's own but if you would like to post again with a photo we may be able to help you better.

This sounds like it is likely a seroma (a fluid pocket under the skin), or a tissue reaction to the suture material - both of these are quite common in cats after spay surgery, and should not cause any serious problems. Less commonly, the swelling could be caused by an infection or even a hernia. If Leia is acting normal (eating and drinking fine, playful, etc.), you can monitor the bump until it's time for her stitches to be removed. Applying a warm compress like a warm wet washcloth to the area 2-3 times a day can help the swelling to resolve faster, as well as restricting her activity as much as possible. If Leia is acting very lethargic or not eating, or if there is any bleeding or yellow-green discharge from the bump, these may be signs of infection - in that case, I would take her to the vet today for an exam and antibiotics or other medication if needed.

Not eating or lethargy are also signs to watch for. This may be a suture reaction, an inflammatory reaction to the sutures used. If concerned you may want to call the shelter to find out if their vet or technician offers rechecks of their surgical patients.

It looks ok. I just suggest you apply a thin layer of Neosprin to it twice a day because it’s a bit raw. I wouldn’t be worried unless it gets very swollen or is open and oozing. Please feel free to ask more questions if you need to. Best wishes!
