Safe bug/flea control for stray cats & kittens in a backyard shelter?

Hi, thabks for using PetCoach! Flea infestations take about 3-6 weeks to break due to the flea life cycle. All pets in the house should be treated with a good long lasting flea preventative. For cats I recommend Bravecto or Comfortis. For dogs with Nexgard, Bravecto or Simparica. You do need to treat the house: vacuum daily and throw bags out each day or clean canister after each vacuum. Put the bag in an outdoor trash can and keep the cans away from the doors. Keep stray cats and wild life away from your doors by removing door mats and sources of food. Sprinkling boric acid powder before vacuuming can help. Unfortunately there is no proven natural way to get rid of pests like fleas in the environment nor on your kitties. You will need insecticides to rid fleas, this is the only effective way. I would recommend Frontline spray for the house and/or a flea fogger from Lowe’s or Home Depot and then Revolution topical or Comfortis oral flea preventative for the kitties. As he was a stray i believe it is important that you take him to the vet for a checkup, vaccination and deworming treatment. you can de-flea him with Advantage spot on, a very effective over the counter flea treatment.

How lovely of you to take in Billu! First I would give him Capstar. It’s a one time pill that starts killing fleas in 30 minutes. Then put on a topical treatment such as Revolution or Advantage. Both are safe to use with Capstar. You will also have to disinfect the environment. Wash his bedding in hot and soapy water. Vacuum all the furniture and carpets. A spray such as Indorex can be used to kill fleas in the home, or you can get the house flea bombed by an exterminator. I hope this helps!

To be sure that you have done everything that can be done to prevent infestation of your other pet, I would recommend using a flea fogger from Lowe's or Home Depot to kill all the fleas that can hide in the cracks of your sofa and carpet. You will need ot evacuate all the pets from the home during the treatmnet, as instructed ont he canister. I wuld also recommend the next treatment of flea prevenation to be a higher quality flea preventative than Sentry. Sentry is a low quality flea preventative unfortunately. I only recommend the following for quality flea preventatives: 1) Revolution 2) Cheristin 3) Advantage 4) Comfortis I hope that you get rid of these fleas for good and protetct your other cat from getting them. YOu can also give your older cat a Capstar right before doing the flea fogger to really guarantee that she/he is flea free. Treating a flea infestation involves treating the pet(s) as well as the environment. Frequently, these "natural" products do little to resolve an infestation.They don't last long enough and/or are simply ineffective. You can use CapStar, a small pill, to kill any fleas on Luna within 30 minutes of ingestion This can be obtained from your veterinarian and can be given daily if needed. A monthly topical , such as Frontline or Revolution, should be used for at least 3 consecutive months to break the flea life cycle.You can apply it at night and it will be dry and safe by morning when the kids are awake. Treat the environment by vacuuming everywhere Luna has been. Discard the bag or empty the canister outdoors immediately afterwards. Wash ALL bedding in the hottest water allowable and dry it in the dryer to kill any flea eggs. A safe area treatment would be Advantage Carpet and Upholstery Spray. I think the best option would be to give your cats an oral flea medication like Comfortis. This medication is very effective and will get the problem under control fairly quickly. This will also be helpful so you won't have to apply anything else to the skin since it sounds like they have some skin issues already. I would also recommend to vacuum well throughout the house and clean all the cat's bedding (this will help remove flea eggs). I hope this helps.
