My kitten has fleas and black things moving in ears. Ear mites?

Be very careful buying online, there are a lot of counterfeit products out there! Best thing to do for Kitty is take him into a vet in the morning to get Revolution (treats fleas and ear mites) and Panacur for the worms.

Poor kitten! I would recommend giving a Capstar tablet by mouth - this can be purchased over the counter, and will kill all fleas on the kitten within a few hours. Once she is 8 weeks old, you can apply a topical flea prevention such as Frontline or Advantage to keep this problem from happening again. I would not recommend attempting to physically remove the fleas from her ear, as you could easily damage her eardrum or cause other problems - once they are dead, they should come out on their own.

some flea treatment just don't work on every cat/flea! I advice waiting at least 10 days and the use a completely different product. Spot ons are usually the best option (revolution/advantage/advocate) make sure it's an appropriate one for kittens and a different main ingredient in it to avoid toxicity. Going to the vet for this will be the best idea. Treatment should be given every month, especially after he start going out if he does. A spray for the house to kill the fleas is very important as well as fleas can survive in carpets for ages.

Poor kitties. YOu should be able to get both treatments from your local pet store. There are many variations to the brands available, but they should all be mostly effective. Tapeworm medication can come in the form of "Praziquantel" or some variations of this and some ear mite medications you may see are "Acarexx", "Milbemite" or some other off brand. 1 treatment should resolve the infections your kitties have. I would also recommend getting them on a flea preventative (if they are old enough) to prevent re-infection with tapeworms, since tapeworms come from flea ingestion or ingestion of poop that is infected with them. To treat the mites, you can use the topical Revolution. It is labeled as safe for pregnant and nursing queens. It is applied directly to the skin on the back of the neck monthly. Pyrantel is safe to use in nursing queens. Praziquantel should be used with caution. Discuss with your veterinarian. The kittens should be dewormed at 2,4,6 and 8 weeks of age. Pyrantel is safe to use in kittens. Praziquantel should not be used in kittens less than 6 weeks of age.

You can buy Frontline spray and wipe your kitten with this. Wet a q-tip with the spray and just gently insert it into the kittens ear to wet the ear canal. Do not push it hard, do not twist it and do not try to clean the ear. If this does not work within the next few days, you will need to take your kitten to a vet for ear cleaning and treatment.

You may want to consider treating the ear mites with a different medication which is applied to the base of the neck instead of inside the ears. This product is called Revolution and is a prescription medication you can get from your veterinarian that can be used to treat ear mites in cats. Might be a better alternative in Muffin's case.
